Hi have been a member on the samba for about 4 years now. Have been more of a reader and a watcher than a poster but have decided to change that. Back in sept. I purchased from one of the members here on the samba an absolutely wonderful 66 Karmann Ghia convertible. This car was almost completely disassembled except for the pan. My plans for this car is to strip the body complete and repair any dents or rust that I find. As you can see from the picture the car looks amazing and most people would have left it alone and just assembled and drove it . But being the professional that I am it was not perfect under close inspection. I have worked in the collision industry since 1982 and have repaired, painted and restored many a car but never one for myself or should I say for my wife. Yes I plan on finishing this car for her but of course I will enjoy it myself also. So if interested watch along as I transform this wonderful car into something spectacular. This is going to be a no expense is to great repair. I will be posting more pictures as I go. I already have a lot more done on the car than is pictured. Please ask questions on what is planed on the repairs of this car because like I said I am very knowledgeable on repairing vehicles and like helping and answering questions related to any kind of repair.

Well...it sure does shine nice and bright. You have a really clean shop in which to do your resto and it looks like you are a golfer. All good signs!
Please post more pics as its hard to get a feel for what we are dealing with. Is the interior in decent shape?
And, how about those plans? Keep it stock? Smash it down? Oh yes, the engine....so many questions and only
one pic!
How about the time line...six month? Year?
I did see that you have the windshield trim as it should be. No Cal-Look rubber! Way to go! (I'm presuming you are keeping it)
It looks as though you are going to be doing this the right way and have the experience and talent to pull it off.
Good luck and post those pictures.

Engine 2017
Engine lid stripped and found a little body work to be done on outside
and inside
As you can see I etch and seal every part first before the body work.
Plans for the car are this. Leaving the pan pretty much as-is have not decided if I want to upgrade the brakes. The P.O. did a really nice job on refinishing the pan already. The rest of the car is going to be a mild custom. Car was originally white under all that red. I like it red so I will be repainting it red again. The interior was stock dark carpet with custom highback grey seats and door panels. I plan on replacing the seats with stock low-back seats with saddle color covers and saddle color door panels and new dark grey carpet. On the body who ever painted it red the first time filled and eliminated half of the stock double moldings that run down the sides. I will be leaving the single molding the way it is I like it. The top was black vinyl . I will be installing a new saddle cloth top. Hope to be finished by summer. But that all depends on haw much time I have to work on her. I have a lot of other work in the shop and I only work on the Ghia after everything else is finished. Customer cars come first and this one is for me! |

Watching with great expectations.
Curious how my gas tank prep worked, maybe you could put some gas inside and see how well it holds up. Tried to do it "by the book" but that remains to be seen.
Just remembered that the spark plugs are loose, so that I could rotate the motor on occasion.
I'm missing it so post up some more pictures, would love to see where you are at. _________________ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3SLIzSCt_cg&list=FLIX26sGa8__1F1loczLPTtg&index=2 |

I"m not sure that you're aware of this, but the deck lid on your car is a later 1970-1974 which has the drain tubes and drain tray. It obviously will work, I just thought I would point it out.
The car looks really straight and solid...this alone will probably save you a years worth of rust repair. |

I'm glad this Ghia went to a professional
I did have a quick question about decklids: Mine has rust bubbles along the bottom edge, on the inside. Is this repairable, or should I look for a clean lid?

Altema, search for a thread from a european, maybe french guy his name was Guepe or something close to that, ...he showed how to seperate the 2 piece trunklid to remove all rust (think it was a 66 too). Basically uncrimp all the way around to seperate the two pieces treat and reverse. |

You know taking apart skins from the inner structure like that is big undertaking and I wouldn't really recommend ever doing it. |
