I am looking at a Vanagon Westy with the following VIN
WV2ZB025XFH...........
What does the X mean.. if this a check digit...anyone know?
W=Germany
V=Volkswagon
2=MPV
Z=Camper
B=4 cyl Gas
0=seat belts
25= Vanagon
X-= check digit internal code??????
F = 1985 model year
H = Hanover |

There is no "W" in step one and the OP's first letter in his VIN is W
? |

True, but look closer, at the adjacent letters.

Your're saying the numerical value is 6?
I'm talking about this chart:
STEP 1
Assign to each number in the VIN its actual mathematical value and assign to each letter the value specified for it in the following chart:
ASSIGNED VALUES:
A=1 G=7 P=7 X=7
B=2 H=8 R=9 Y=8
C=3 J=1 S=2 Z=9
D=4 K=2 T=3
E=5 M=3 U=4
F=6 N=4 V=5 |

Yes, that chart. You can see by the letters and numbers adjacent to where the W would fit that someone made a typing error and left out the W=6 entry. I see they also screwed up in some other places, missing the L and putting the wrong numbers to M and N.
Anyway, here is another link, maybe easier to use too.
