|
|
Ok Ive been working out kinks in my 67 for about two months now, It started when I pulled my engine to replace the clutch and throw-out bearing, after that I had two stripped holes on a rear drum and after a sh#%y brazilian drum blew out the rear seal, I got a good old german drum. After that the bus runs and drives fine but at odd times it wont start. Its a dual carb 1914, hooked to a freeway flyer with rgb's and when I try to start it the engine turns over but wont catch. so I went through the engine and checked everything, Points are good, timings good, carbs are good and tuned, alternators and battery are good, valves adjusted, solenoid is good, and starter is good. The car will sometimes start just fine and other times when it wont a jump will get it to catch and start. The fuel pump is good as it runs fine once going and the carbs aren't starving for fuel. The starter has a normal amp load when starting so i don't think the brushes are worn. I am thoroughly stumped, any one have any good ideas on what could be the problem? |

Yeah. What are you not getting during this no start condition? Spark, or fuel? _________________ Waiting for santa to drop off funky green. I can wish can't I???? |

Its getting fuel because I can flood it while pumping the gas when its turning over trying to start, the spark plugs are only a year old, I haven't checked their spark while starting but I assume they are sparking because the bus runs fine once going its just getting it going that is the current issue. Ill check the spark when I get home but I'm fairly confident they are sparking when it tries to start. |

Check the choke and remove the spark plugs to see how rich the engine is. _________________ Don't worry; be happy. (Baba) |

Could it be the cap or rotor button? _________________ 61 so34 flip seat

I've been having the same issue. It was a bad ground on the battery. _________________ Call your Cunado's:

By taking the ground strap off & cutting 1" off of the end and re crimping it. I then relocated the ground wire to a bolt. Just below the engine lid prop. The original set up was crusty/ rusty and behind the battery were I couldnt see it until I pulled the battery. _________________ Call your Cunado's:

If I set my Volt Meter to test continuity, touch the end of the ground cable that goes to battery and the lug on my motor, it beeps showing continuity, should this tell me I have a good ground? My battery is gounded right under the engine lid prop also. _________________ 62 Standard Type 2 (Nothing Fancy)

Ok so after some more work I achieved nothing Its getting gas and spark fuel is good and battery ground is fine. After driving the bus for two days Its starting about 80% of the time, sometimes it will start after sitting all night sometimes it doesn't. Ill drive it for a while stop at the groceries store start it go to a gas station then it wont start after filling up, though that's not the problem because it has started at most gas stations. I'm going to test the compression next but for now I'm just making a habit of parking on hills |

If it push starts, I doubt that its a compression issue.

After years of the same trouble with my bug, and trying everything from soup to nuts, the high torque starter found above is the cats a** solution. It spins over faster and has more torque - the motor started every time (until I accidentally burnt it )
Some guys will tell you to install a bendex in your starter wiring to give your factory starter the extra juice it really needs to do the job - just more parts to wear out.
I replaced the battery, relocated the fuel filter, installed and electronic fuel pump, replaced the carb, points, condenser, coil, plug wires, installted platnum spark plugs, tore my hair out trying to figure this out. Just needed a better starter. _________________ What can we build for you?

It could be the starter though I don't think that's the problem because when it does start it usually catches on the first crank, and when it doesn't start it will turn over and over and may give a slight sputter when I stop turning the engine over. |

I didn't think so either, for a long, long time. I was wrong. _________________ What can we build for you?

I am thinking I have the same issue, my awesome O'reillys starter can barely turn my motor. My ghia was doing the same thing, but it turned out my ignition switch was giving out. When I would switch on my ignition, I had 12 volts at the coil, when cranking it would drop to 9 volts. I replaced my ignition switch and it fixed it. I am having the exact problem right now with my bus. _________________ 62 Standard Type 2 (Nothing Fancy)

Well I finally fixed it, i didn't want to jinx it by posting on the samba to soon but after going through everything 10 times I found i had bad continuity in the center button in the distributer cap. So i went to checkers and bought a new one for a whopping 6 bucks and I'm back in business. |
