How do people figure out which LEDs to use to replace incandescent bulbs? I have a dome Jetta light that also has a map light, I'd like to replace those two bulbs.

well, that is interesting - the blog cites a test by P2, which tested bulbs that run on household AC (thus, the CFL will have a ballast of some sort)
the manf. of the replacement LED says it uses 1/4 the power of a fl. bulb

If they look like the original map light bulbs, you'll have to measure the length of them.
My Jetta maplights that I installed have shorter bulb lengths than the originals, I should
have measured the bulbs before I placed my order. I ordered 42mm festoons and they
are too big for the Jetta fixtures, so in went the originals. The width of the bulb al so has to
be taken into account. Some of these high powered LEDS cluster may be too wide for you
bulb compartment. Not sure what year you took the light out of the Jetta, but here is an
example of all the bulbs that would go into a 2000 Jetta. Use the bulb finder for your
particular model.

IMHO, ditch the LED tube idea that relies on the outdated ballast fixture. A hard wired, 16 ft strip of 300 LEDs will only draw approx 1280 mA. (The higher the mAh, the longer the battery will last). Of course, you'll never need that many LEDs unless you plan on turning your van into a mobile casino, but whatever LED configuration you choose, the increase in inefficiency is far better.
During my "real world tests" I have found that since replacing my florescent galley light with two 20" LED strips, I can leave them on for hours without having to start her up to charge the batteries. |

I had a few extra under-counter LEDs from a house project and once I saw the power supply was 12vdc, I thought maybe they would work.
They did. I had an old, broken fixture, and wired them up. Only cost me the price of a switch to get it done. I still have the other florescent fixture if I need it later.
It's a little brighter, and only pulls .4A instead of the .7A the stock one pulled. With my 44Ah Werker, we can eat dinner in the van for like, 88 hours.
