New Build: Offroad Guy going German Look Super Beetle

Hi,

I have decided to build a "German Look" style Super Beetle. Don't ask why because I don't know. Guess it is because I cannot really find any places to take out the Baja Bug and I am getting bored. With all of these nice twisty roads out here I decided to build a nice street car with a focus on performance. Thought about building a early 60's mustang. But hey I have about 20+ years of VW experience so why not build a VW that handles well. The whole German Look thing caught my attention so what the heck I am going to build one. Here is the foundation for my new project. May God have mercy on my soul.

Original Motor (got it running after a good carb rebuild and new plugs)

No Battery Cancer

Clean Original Pans with only surface rust

Full Flow 1776 with 36 Dells, 4 wheel drilled and slotted disc brakes, Porsche 7x17 Turbo Twists, Topline Maxx Struts, Camber kit, 7/8" Front Sway bar, Rear Sway bar, Urethane bushings all around.

A er -- hate to bring something up
That fuel filter needs to be attached to something- many bugs have burned to the ground - with vibration it can come loose from the carb

I think it's a safe assumption Jerry that the single carb won't be staying letalone the entire engine.

Yeah. The picture of the engine is the way I got it. Already replaced all the lines and filters. Even got rid of that garden hose connected to the emissions canister. Thanks for keeping an eye on me anyway. This motor will not remain in the car that is for sure. I have a new 1776 sitting in the garage right now but I got my eye on a 74 911 motor and transmission that has been sitting for months on Craigslist out here.

Based on my Baja Bug experience who knows where this project will go. Laughing

This will be my first VW street car since the 59 I had in High School. Well five Baja Bugs later here I am building a Super Beetle. Who would have thunk. Anyway the journey is always the best part of any VW project. Just got a big box of parts from CIP and WW to work on over the holiday. You know the normal stuff that people let go. Rolling Eyes

Brakes, Hoses, Ball Joints, etc that ought to keep me busy till after the holidays.

Here is a picture of the Baja Bug in the other side of the garage. 1973 Standard with Thing Beam, Thing Trailing Arms, Type 4 CVs and Axles and a nice 1776 for power. You know youv'e got the VW fever bad when the 540i is parked outside. Laughing

Solid car for here in the South. Trunk looks the roughest. I know you Cali guys think it's shit. But, hey you have the gay capital of the world in your back yard. So, I'll take a rusty little bug over San Fran any day.

Just think it through slowly or you'll waste your money on junk shit like it did. I am finally staring to pay for quality parts.

If your going to a german look are you changing wheels? Dont waste your money on drum brake parts and dont buy disc brakes until your dead nutz set on your bolt pattern.

First Question: Wheel Offset

My car is a stock 74. I will be replacing the front struts with Maxx Struts from TopLine. I have read threads on SuperBeetlesOnly and here on the Samba and am confused. I would like to keep the fenders stock. There are a set of Porsche 928 Flat style wheels on sale out here on Craigslist. Seller says they are 16x6 wheels with a ET55 offset. Is this too much off an Offset? Would like to run Porsche Wheels that would fit so any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Those wheels should be fine with the Maxx Struts. I'm running 17x7 ET 52 with the Maxx Struts and 944 disk brakes.

I have 17x7 ET 55 with 3/8 spacers with Maxx struts. When your done with them, Ill take one for a spare if it's cheap Wink
