this is what happens, when you mix crank and speed..
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

i had this in the old photo album.
it's an old friend's 1958.
he drove on this road daily..decided to party on his lunch break..
and thats when it happen..
going about 50mph, he lost control coming off a straight away to an s-turn..
he skidded right, then left, and then into an suv..which threw him into the guardrail...and his head hit the windshield..
that was about 6 years ago..and he i still trying to get back into the scene..
so dont party too hard while driving...
you might lose your dub forever...

ya, that ride was sweet..
we'd just got back from the VW Classic in So Cal a week before..
and just a few days before he put new bumpers and 5 spoke wheels on it.
also his interior was just redone...
he hit the rail so hard it broke one of his rims off in half, and broke the trani from the impact...
ya it was sweet....and too bad

i think vw's handle great..!
i've owned over 250 of them all aircooled and i have never had handling problems..!
the moral of the story is dont drive F#CKED UP...stay sober!!!when you drive your dubs..
not only you, but other people could get injured...plus you could lose your ride and go to JAIL Crying or Very sad

My last car was the rear-wheel drive, '93 nissan 240SX (pulls more G's in a corner than a Corvette Z06) with 17" wheels, Nitto's and Eibach springs. If you've ever driven a car that really (seriously) handles awesome, to it's limits, you'd realize Beetles handle like garbage. As I said, they're fer lookin' at.

Bugs are old cars.
Compared to about any 1950's era car, a bug handles well for a pre-war design. Ever drive a 1940 stock Ford around a corner? Makes a bug seem magical. Very Happy

like i said..i think they handle great..
i have never owned anything else besides air cooled dubs..
probably driven 1000000 miles in them and i never had any problems..
so you can say i have nothing to compare them to...
till then i'll just keep on driving...
oh, you ever heard of the saying "BUILT TO DRIVE...."
guess you guys are the types that have trailer queens..?
have fun

As if we drive them because we think somehwere in our minds they handle like a Z06. Please . . . . what a retarted statement. OR, since they don't handle that way they obviously suck. Lame thinking. My beetle handles to my expectations and can be made to handle better if I desire it to.

Handling is handling, it's not really a relative term. I had the same thinking as most of you and hadn't driven anything but a vw for over 10 years. The difference is out of this world. If you can't say you've driven a car that pulls a full "G" on a skidpad, and you say your beetle handles well, you probably drive like an old lady. I once drifted around a 45mph corner at 89mph (heads up digital display) racing a 5 series. I eventually lost in the straights, but I guarantee, any beetle would've ended up in the ditch.

I think in the sense of this post the the term handling is relative. I think it handles well, but NOT relative to a G machine. I beleive it handles fine for a 40 year old car with <50 HP, and not bad for those with 100+ HP. I also agree that many other cars handle infinitely better than the VW - no disagreements there. It is entirely possible to say your car handles well and not mean that it is comparable to a 5 series or any other high end ride - there is no parrallel being drawn there. Do other cars handle 100 - 1000X better? Of course.

I think the cars and courses you've been on sound like cool experiences too. My brother inlaw works for Bridgestone Engineering and he has shared some great stories with me about how they push their high speed tires to the limits during product testing. He has had some of the same wheel time as what you are describing and I'd have to say I'm envious of that Wink

This is sort of off subject but, have any of you guys seen the blue ( I would call it) "Lemans stye" racer bug on Germanlook.com? They have several short films you can download that show the bug killing porsches and other extremely high end cars. Im sure about .01% of the car is still Vintage VW but its still killer anyway! If any of you guys havent seen it, go check them out, its pretty awesome!
