I need to purchase a engine tach for tuneups. I am after the kind that clamps to a spark plug wire and can be used for different engines like, 2-4-6-8 cylinder. Any ideas on a economical unit...... Thx.

I use one of these. Tach, dwell, and voltmeter. Economical and very useful. Can be bought at just about any auto parts store.

If you want to use one that clamps to the spark plug wire you are looking for an inductive one and I don't think those will read dwell. You need one that hooks to the coil like the one shown by the prior post.
