I'm thinking about getting a hightop for my 82 diesel AAZl vanagon. The thing is I'm 6' 6" Shocked

I'm 6'1 and with the timber-tech high top I have no issues standing up in my 83.5 (1.9l AAZ). IIRC there's about 6'10" of space between floor and the top without insulation and with a 5/8" deck and carpet. I'm out on the road again, but I'll try and measure it when I get back.

The hight of the high-top does not resolve the problem I have with either bunk. I'm just too tall and my feet end up hanging off.

Hey Matt - re the bed length - You could make your "upstairs" bed extension somewhat wider and still have access room to get up there - or perhaps an additional "flip over" piece that you'd flip over once up there. Alternately, a hinged "flip up" extension for the bottom bunk.
I think that the best part of doing your own interior is that you get it to be just the way you want it to be for your use of the vehicle.

I've already thought about splitting the fold out portion of the upper bunk using a piano hinge to allow it to fold out and be long enough for me. Honestly, at this point I end up using the space above more for luggage and gear than for sleeping, but as the baby gets bigger that will undoubtlably change.

I think as kids get older - and it doesn't take long - there are a couple of stages. When they are an infant, you probably want them down below with you. Ages 1 1/2 to 3 are the trickiest - too young to be "up there" by themselves but they'll climb up there whenever they can get away with it. After about 3 you might as well just figure out a safe way for them to get up and down, probably with some sort of barrier so that they can't roll out and fall down in their sleep.
My wife and I like sleeping "upstairs" but we're about to be evicted by our two little guys - actually not so little any more - 8 and 10 yrs - who have been campaining for the top bunk since I put the hightop on.

We have done the other end of that effort. Since our little girl was born my wife has crashed out up top with the baby and I had the glory days of all the space to myself downstairs. Now my daughter is almost 4 and wants to sleep upstairs by herself at first then later in the night she wants to sleep downstairs with us~~~~Then I get the boot to the top bunk Exclamation

Thinking about working on the interior again, it's been warm here and I feel like I'm missing out on an opportunity. My parents just bought a travel trailer. One of the things I reall like about this is that it's lined with carpet. I'm thinking of lining at least part of my interior with a cut pile. Anyone have any suggestions for a source? Have you ordered cut pile from somewhere in the past and had a good experience?

Watch it.. Once you start doing that it is easier to install that carpet than it is to remove. Once that stuff gets moldy Shocked

You may wind up wishing you never have done it. I suggest checking out a Scamp RV and your nose will tell you the answer if weather you want to or not. Very Happy

Good point Jedi, their La Casita doesn't smell but it's reall ventilated well. I know how much condensation builds up with just me in Zeno. Also looking at marine fabrics and carpets.

Hi Matt - a couple of thoughts re the carpet - 1. Are you going to insulate then put the carpet on top of the insulation or is the carpet to be the insulator and finish material? If, as I suspect, that the carpet is to be the sole layer applied to the interior of the top, then you will get some insulative benefit and a finish material at the same time. I would encourage you to be careful to get the carpet, probably with some sort of rubber backing, as far down into the joint ofthe top and the van roof as possible - do not leave any relatively potential cold surface for water vapour to condense upon.
Once your interior finish is complete, condensation and the management of water vapour should be considered to ba an ongoing issue. If y9ou are sleeping, eating, cooking in the van, water vapour is inevitable and so is condensation. If you remember your Gas Laws and the relationship of temperature and relative humidity, you can pretty easily devise a strategy to ensure that moisture laden air is expelled from your van through your vent and replaced with dry air.
You have the skills to create a humidity controlled cycle of the power vent to expel moisture laden air - keep on the lookout for someone throwing out a de-humifier and harvest the humidistat. the best way to prevent condensation and mold it to get rid of the moist air before the water vapour condenses and becomes problematic.

Matt - you might want to check out Noxudol - insyncro mentioned it to me - primarily a sound insulator, it has some thermo properties as well - this is for the lower parts of the van where you've stripped the interior.
Back to the condensation etc - as long as you can get dry air, of pretty well any temperature, circulating and being expelled, the interior will stay condensate free and, more importantly, mold free.
I Just got notified that the next shipment of tops (7 in total) is "off the boat" in Montreal, awaiting train or truck transport to Toronto. As of now, they're supposed to be here for me to pickup on the 4th of Jan. There will soon be 7 more hightops on the road, 4 of them being installed in Colorado.

Having owned both an Adventurewagen and now a pop-top, I think this would be the best option. I love storing things in the high top of the Adventurewagen (like skis, bike wheels, etc). However, sleeping in a pop top is so much better than trying to sleep in the top of the Adventurewagen. This Reimo top seems to have the best of both worlds. Carthago and Teca seem to make something similar but I prefer the smooth lines of the Reimo top.

Those windows look like aftermarket double pane, so the van was probably a panel van they added windows to. Not sure I would go through all the welding effort to remove a window behind a cabinet. Maybe use bricks and let the next owner discover the old window.
