I am extremely happy with the 2wd gw lift springs/ bilstien hd's/ addco sway bar setup in my carat. Not the weight of a Westy tho. |
Agreed.
I have had that setup on a Carat vs. Westy and the two rides are very different. |

You have the 2wd springs which are wound a bit differently than the Syncro springs.
Also, I may be wrong but it looks like you might want to have your front springs checked, it doesn't look like its sitting properly.

Hey Dave. Sorry, I didn't mean to worry you about this. Though I was pretty shocked to see the way that they were sitting in your van when I saw them yesterday. Being that your van is bone stock with nothing but the factory interior I would definitely recommend that you email Gowesty and see if you can get a replacement or something _________________ 1987 Syncro

Waiting on an answer from GW. I wonder if the compression would change with the front springs installed? |
It shouldn't, the new springs up front won't change the weight of anything.

so looking at photodaves photo, whats the point of installing springs that have the first four coils compressed other than ride height? looks like a spring not matched to a vehicle in my eye.....I agree with:

Yeah, in effect it would appear to be the same as having a shorter spring installed with a 1 1/2" or so spacer. _________________ One of these days I'm gonna settle down,

Here's some pics of the rear springs installed. Any feedback is appreciated.

Mine look exactly the same, I assumed this was normal and the spring decompressed the ones that touch during travel...rides and feels normal
I guess we wait for a response. _________________ '87 Syncro Weekender |

I installed OME's, rebuilt and clocked the CV's. I added 18mm spacers for looks?...I suppose. It is a Weekender with a Zetec. I can't see 50lb's having much effect. I have approx. 1500Km's on this set up.

I've only driven about 60 km because I haven't put in the front springs and done the alignment. I wasn't worried until I saw some of the reactions in this thread! So far it seems to ride fine.
How do you like the OME shocks? _________________ 89 Syncro GL Westfalia 2.1 WBX/WBXaustSS

I would understand if the "coil bind" (coils touching) were to happen when the spring is being compressed under load or going over a bump increasing the spring rate as explained by GoWesty but I don't see the advantage of starting off with bound coils in a syncro that is not even in motion, no extra weight, stock engine and not even loaded up for camping! what is the advantage of that? Just curious. _________________ 1991 Westy auto w/ Peloquin TBD
