Well, the fella who started the SO44 thread inspired me. Figured it was about time to start a thread on SO45 Mosaik kits. I've been researching them for a bit but figured I should start a thread on them to centralize some info and document this funky piece of history.
If there are other folks out there who have an SO45 or want to share their knowledge, here's the place to do it.
Here's what I know (mostly fromcorrespondence with Michael Steinke):
- SO45 "Mosaik Camper" (means built in step by step just as you want to use it or what you want to pay for – not a complete campmobile.
- SO45´s are extremely rare (available since autumn of 66 ONLY in Germany).
- Real wooden "Limba" furniture parts instead of "Getalit" (plastic surface).
- Same layout as the SO42's but lot cheaper back in the day.
- Because of the fact that you could buy all items/details/parts of the SO45 conversion one after the other Westfalia did NOT count how many (complete) SO45 camper they produced. We have only 3 surviving vehicles with nearly complete SO45 kits registered.
Some other threads:

From what I've been able to pice together, the upholstery should be the Yellow/Orange plaid as seen in this pic:

Here are some pics of my Tourist Delivery SO45. Skylight in pop top, ice box, and upholstery not original:
Note: The table is flipped upside down. Table top is actually laminate/plastic. Can get pics is anyone wants to see the material close up. Armrest is one that I got out of an SO42.
Some pics of a Dormy SO45 in Europe. A real beauty courtesy of Michael Steinke:

Cool bus Matt! I like the skylight window! (Always loved all the extra light a Dorm top lets in while driving around). Did you see this ad that popped up yesterday? I wonder if he can get some pics for the thread.

Thanks Chris. Hopefully I'll get it out West a fair bit this summer when I get my 2110 finished up. Would be good to see some pics of that one in the classifieds. Dude shows as a member since yesterday so I'm a little suspicious - hopefully I'm wrong. There's a dormy for sale in the classifieds right now with the long SO45 cabinet, headbanger, and what appeards to be 1/2 of the spice rack.

The seller just added some photos. Definitely an SO45 which is cool. I sent him a message and am hoping he adds the story of his bus to the thread. Here are some pics from the ad.

don't know much about so45's but is the blau und weiss (blue and white) one an original s045?? Looks like so45 cabinets were installed in a standard bus??
Also while looking at that blue and white so45- what's up the huge hole in the side of the former ice box?? Also looks like they moved the fold out table from the front cargo door to the front of the former icebox (perhaps to cover the fact that the coldbox door appears to be missing as well) |

I'm going to speculate by the odd shape of the hole he had a cooler of some sort stuffed in there, looks like it was slightly wider than the cabinet too. The PO of our SO-44 gutted the ice box for gas bottle storage and was using a propane powered cooler in place of the side jump seat, betcha that one had something similar but the guy had a saw handy for the install.

I'm thinking that the kit was probably purchased after the fact and put in the bus. From what I gather, some were outfitted at the factory and others had the kits purchased/installed at a dealership or by the owner themselves. I'd like to the an M-Plate on this one. The icebox on the Blauweiss bus looks like it's seen better days. Definitely saw some "customization" which is too bad as I've only seen two photos of SO45 boxes. The side table should be on the side of the box but with half the sife missing, it had to be relocated. I don't think mine ever had an icebox and the small table is mounted on the front cargo door. _________________ Sep '59 Mango Standard

I belive this kit was designed so you could buy it and install it in your kombi or microbus. It is shown next to an microbus in the advertisement.
Also, did you notice how the bottom of the bed has a slot for the heat to pass through from the heater log.

Hi Matt, great thread maybe I should start an SO35 only thread
Your quote above implies there is a record of how many of each model Westfalia produced, is that info available ? |

That count is a quote from Michael Steinke. I believe he's kept a tally through his research. _________________ Sep '59 Mango Standard

I have a 67 Splitty Transporter that I would like to install parts of the SO-45 kit in. I am looking for the table, jump seat, and the door storage. Does anyone have any info on where you can purchase these? What about drawings to make your own? |

Thanks Greg. Do you what it has for the icebox/jumpseat? Almost looks like a mix of 45 with something else. _________________ Sep '59 Mango Standard
