I have a customer with a 79 westy with about 3000 miles on a GEX remanufactured engine that someone else installed. From the start it has had numerous minor oil leaks I've addressed. Recently he's complained about power loss, #2 cylinder has low compresion and when I pulled the valve covers #2 Exhaust valve looks like it has recessed way into the head. Even with the adjuster screw out of the rocker the spring retainer hits the rocker arm. With the rocker off the valve sticks out 10-13mm farther than the others. I've only taken an few Type 4s apart in 35 years and know they can suffer from dropped valve seats but that should cause the valve to be INTO the combustion chamber of the head too far not OUT too far into the rocker house. Maybe just a junk valve or recessed seat? What do you think ? _________________ Midwest Autosavers, Inc. Woodstock, IL

It's a GEX. Do a search on that, not good reviews. If you already know #2 has low compression then the 1st step to a solution is to pull that head and see what is going on. _________________ Why Yes it is a Magic bus!

Pulled the head, #2 exhaust valve seat was loose and pounded / recessed so far in it cut through into the exhaust port and the port began to melt into the exhaust. No signs of overheating, no contact to the piston even the loose valve seat and it's valve look like new still. _________________ Midwest Autosavers, Inc. Woodstock, IL |
