i have here a gearbox, its come from a splitscreen panelvan from '59. I think its not a splitscreen gearbox, the case is from VW. I can't find information for a gearbox with H code by vw, is it a early porsche gearbox?

I am fairly certain that isn't the OG tranny. 59 would still be splitcase tranny.
The axle tubes also are incorrect for 59. There wouldn't be mounts for the rubber snubbers. And depending on axle nut size, I am betting that has big nut gear reduction boxes. Looks like there is the plug on back of RGB(Big Nut).
What does the mount look like on your bus for the front of tranny? I have seen a splitcase with normal tunnel mount in 59ish?

While that tranny looks to be from a 65-67 bus, it may well be useful for your bus.

VW changed from split case to tunnel case tranny at VIN 469 xxx.
If your have an early 59, it came with a split case tranny, and that is not a straight bolt in.
There are adaptors that let you bolt a tunnel transmission in your split case bus.

If you have a late 59, it is a straight bolt in, and if you are running a larger than 36hp engine, you may prefer the later gearing in that gearbox.

This is where a split case tranny bolts into a bus. see the circle for the nose cone. Is yours like this?

Ignore that plate in the bottom center on the cross-bar, the previous owner added that.

Are you wanting to know the production date, or the gearing inside?

It may have been rebuildt with different gearing, you know.

So what is an "H" tranny? I dont see it in the list. I have a tranny that has "H" also but came from a 1960 bus. Original? It sure looks original to me with non split axle boots, 6v, and small nut RGB's.

Pat at ITS (I nternational T ransmission S upply) in San Diego said the "H" means they are bus. I always though it meant "bus" and "12 volt" hence the '67 affiliation.
