Just completed a 1.8T engine conversion into a 85' Vanagon and it's all California legal !
The motor was removed from a 02' VW GTI.
Here's some pics...

Nice! Under the engine cover too! How much did you have to lower the transmission from stock?
I like the exhaust layout. Everything is in stock position - except much larger.

Sweetness! That's one of the cleanest and stealthiest raised engine lids I've seen. That engine totally belongs in there. _________________ Casey--

Looks great! Did you make those engine brackets/cradle bars? _________________ 1986 Canadian Syncro Westy TDI - 1989 Syncro Single Cab - 2001 Audi S4 - 1981 VW Caddy ABA - 1980 VW Caddy EV - 1973 VW T-181 |

Thanks everyone for your positive comments!
It's just too much fun building 1.8T breadbox's!
The oil pan is stock from the GTI donor vehicle and doesn't need any modification.
I wanted the engine lid spacer to be very simple, yet functional. The engine lid spacer is 1-1/4" tall and the trans is spaced down 1-1/2".
The exhaust system is all Tig welded with 304 stainless mandrel bent tubing and uses the donor cat. It sounds great!
Ground clearance on this 2wd is approximately 8" and that's with stock suspension and 27" tires. More clearance could be had with taller springs if needed.
I'm using our newly redesigned engine carrier system,it's similar to what VW did with the Diesel Vanagon engines, but it mounts upright at 15 degrees. _________________ 81' Single Cab Syncro 1.8T GMW

Are pricing and options listed anywhere?
This conversion is really growing on me and I am nowhere near Cali. |

There is a 06A factory steel pan available too! I don't remember the part number but I think it is usually on 2.0. That's what I am going to do on my TDI conversion so it can take abuse if I am unlucky enough! _________________ 1986 Canadian Syncro Westy TDI - 1989 Syncro Single Cab - 2001 Audi S4 - 1981 VW Caddy ABA - 1980 VW Caddy EV - 1973 VW T-181 |

that looks very nice in there. great work.
I too am leaning more this way.
is there any reason it couldn't be mounted 'upright' without any tilt from it's original orientation in a doka, ?
I have 9 5/8" from the top of my WBX alternator to the bottom of the engine hatch.
I'm nearly 100% street driven so I don't need higher than stock ground clearance. someday I may get shorter springs, but I'm on carat springs now.
thanks for sharing your pics ! drool worthy ! |

You kinda gotta look out for the PWR Steering pump when you put these engines uprite Russel @ syncro-nutz did a TDI uprite and i remember the pump was the lowest thing and needed to modifi the diesel syncro bash plate, |

Great stuff!
Looks like the cat is supported off d-side of block. I have been using something similar.
Is the muffler supported from body? I imagine the turbo must quell some exhaust noise.
Interesting to have a look at another 15º install. I'm currently in the middle of carrier and exhaust redesign and am still making decisions. Very helpful to see your pics.
Thanks!

Excellence! I really like your lid spacer. I might have to borrow your idea there. Super clean, congrats on the BAR sticker. |
