I hate hate hate hate hate hate hate hate my f*cking drivers vent window.
The thing howls, you open it, get a chill, rain in the face, water down the door panel. The seal, glass and frame all look to be in a+ shape but it is a good 1/4" from sealing up.
I don't like it, Don't want it. I'm all about A/C and windows closed.
These beasts had to have had solid windows as an option or where they all vented??????? _________________ -cliff

Fixed windows were an option but it is a rare beast in the US. Troll the classifieds for the windows from a '91 L and you should be set.
Option #2 is to contact a European vendor and see if they can hook you up.

A good fellow in Berkeley Ca has a pair for sale here in the classified for $160. Since they came with the late model "L" the trim should be black with no chrome. _________________ 1987 Syncro Westfalia, stock (bought 1994)

Anyone ever put new seals on and still have issues with the vent window?
The seal looks A+
When you close the window it takes some effort to get it to close all the way and to lock it.
Don't want to buy a new seal and be SOL _________________ -cliff

Pull the glass, and instal a nice metal panel.
Then you can mount some remote mirrors...from any modern truck or minivan.
I like my vent windows..new seals and a little rehab and they seal up tight and are nice and quiet |

If the glass was a factory option, someone should be reproducing it. Have you checked with a local AUTO glass shop to see if they can get it? _________________ 89 Westy 2.1 Auto

With the right part numbers you may still be able to buy in the US.
You just need the seal and the glass.
The glass is bent so a normal glass shop would have issues with that.
Find the numbers and plug them into one of the fine Vanagon vendor web sites. You may get lucky. _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

My vent window never did howl but I wanted to seal it off due to a past break in where the thief pried open the latch and got into my Van. I got one of those vent window locks that you install from the inside of the Van.
Since you have to tug on it a bit to secure the lock, Im thinking that the "tug" helps tighten up the fit so there is no whisteling or howling. |
