|
|
OK 1500 Club purists, here’s a quick question about og wheel colours for a ‘64 square.
The car I have is birch green, and I’m assuming the inside of the rim would be green and the outside ivory. However, I noticed on the 1500 Club website a few cars, mostly white or black, had rims with the inner portion painted black instead of body colour, and some looked like there was a silver/grey inner rim.
So the question is this: How were my rims painted from the factory:
Green inside and ivory outside?
Black inside/ivory outside?
Grey inside/ivory outside?
When I say ivory, I’m assuming that is the correct colour name, but please let me know if it is not.
In looking at the vehicles in the 1500 club, a lot of them have trim rings, so I cannot see how they are painted.
And what about the spare? At least one ‘64 in the 1500 club has an original spare, with VW tire, that looks all black (car is nutria) would that be correct? |

IIRC, the "S" models had black rims with trim rings on them. "N" models were white outside, black inside. If you browse through the Archives, you'll notice the only brochures for '64/'65 that have differently painted wheels were the ones produced at the beginning of the model year (usually August or earlier). Once production started and they used production model cars, the wheels are mostly covered by trim rings. Here is an example.

But, if you notice, it has a stamp on the last page with the date Jul 5 1963 on it. Produced with '63 cars, or an "N" as I said above. _________________

Here you go again, now if someone could help me remove the trim rings, we could find the color of the rims.

My type 3 bible only has the wheel colors for Anthracite, Ruby Red, Black and Pearl White. _________________ I'd be UNSTOPPABLE if not for Law Enforcement and PHYSICS.

So Black it is hey? I plan to do the car as close to stock as possible, though I don't think I have the right trim rings, so I'm not sure what to do there.
On a side note, looking at the '64 Canadian brocure in the archives, I notice that the cars shown have side markers and euro tail lights, which I don't think the actual Canadian cars had (mine doesn't). |

Since your car is either an "S" or an "E" (as Neil pointed out), they should be all black. At least the trim ring (VW called it a "wheel embelisher") is common for the up to the end of the 65 model year. It's part number 341 601 155A, which was used up to chassis number 315 220 883. The 341 part number prefix, means the part was first used on a T-34 Ghia. I hope this helps. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Thanks Bob, it does help.
I have a few trim rings floating around, but have never really looked at them, though I think they're all for Type Is. I'll check them out next time I'm home.
It's a very good thing, this Samba thing. |

Correct color for the '64 wheels is L41 black.
