Hey all,
My Bay has 5 seats, 3 across the back, 2 up front. It has 2 units behind the front seats. I need to carry 6 people. Anyone got any ideas? I was thinking of taking out the units and putting in a bench seat, microbus style. But i cant source 2 seats and also that would mean changing my insurance.
I was also thinking could i make the front seat a bench seat, so it would take 3.
This is only going to be a temp thing to get from ireland to the euros in poland (and hopefully back)
Anyone got any ideas? |

There's a place you can buy a "middle seat" to convert the front to a bench. I'll do a little search on here if I were you ...

Here's how VW did it for Baywindows, the parts won't fit a splitty but if you've got some fab skills you could build something similar from scratch:

You need M501. An optional extra kit by VW.
M-Code
M500 = Full width metal partition between cabin and load compartment - bus model types 21-23
M501 = Two-person passenger seat instead of single passenger seat in cabin, spare tyre in left side of luggage compartment (not with M500) - bus models 21-24
Source: VW Transporter and Microbus Specification Guide 1967-1979 (By Vincent Molenaar and Alexander Prinz)
To see what this means, go to the Baywindow "Rarest of the Rare" thread and Jasonbye and cdennisg's posts. No welding here!

Sorry for the crappy pics but the bus was full of stuff. Eric (long-roofs) tells me this was to allow a 2/3rds bench seat to be placed in a walk through bus. So far only seen on 68's. I don't know if there is also something down low and towards the front that would provide a spot for the front of the eat to mount. I would assume there is.
I did not get a pic of the M-code due to the immense amount of crap piled inside this bus. The owner was not around this time, but if I ever am able to catch him there, I will try to procure this part, along with a few others on this bus. Anyone ever seen a full bench bulkhead on a 68, other than double cabs? |

buy or rent another bus - station wagon style. Before you do watch Little Miss Sunshine and you may want to rent a bigger mini-van. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

Just to add to the above, here is a cab middle seat for the M501 kit (or a kit in it's own right???), available as an alternative to putting in a double seat on the passenger side, and having to dump the single passenger seat. Instead this slotted between the existing passenger and driver seats. Not my picture, saved this from the classifieds on here back in May 2010, I think it was for sale in the UK. A definite contender for the "rarest of the rare" thread.
(Edit: I now think that the metalwork is a kit by bluebird customs in the UK, and not an M501, with a very well done TMI covering over padding, so a lot more recently made than initially thought) see: http://www.bluebird-type2.co.uk/Split%20bay%20interior.htm _________________ 1965 Type 1 Deluxe (1200cc)

I did that once, from Madrid (Spain) to Trondheim (Norway), and back. I spent the entire month sleeping on the floor. Once you get used to it, it is not so bad....assuming you have pillows, of course. _________________ "May the fweem be with you"
