|

67 bus. Just had trans/rgb's rebuilt. I was reinstalling the two nuts that hold the star adjuster assembly on. Long story short, one of the two holes for the studs stripped. I will try to chase it first but if that does not work, can i go to a stepped stud? If so, what size? Where would i find it? Does my rgb need to come apart to do it? |

Think you need to take the RGB apart and get a spare outer half on there. Then you can take the time to fix the one for future use. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

That happens. Bummer. I usually just swap the outter reduction box half.
If you do drill and tap it to a larger size, it is best to do it with the cover removed, otherwise you are sending shavings down into the gears and bearings of the box.
I have some box halfs for sale if you want to replace it. |

Years ago, I used something called "stud-n-bearing" by, I believe, Locktite, on an RGB stud, and that sucker was like it was welded on the case. Heat from a torch is supposed to allow the stud to be removed. _________________ Don't worry; be happy. (Baba) |

Consider a helicoil insert. If it is barely oversized, you may be able to just tap it for the helicoil without drilling. The thread pitch will be the same and you can use your old bolt (or one from the stainless aisle at Ace the same size as your old bolt). |

Having dealt with heli-coils in the USAF would advise against using them there. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

It will forever leak as it's not a blind hole. I could recommend some killer marine epoxy like Marine-Tex but getting another 1/2 case is the best. |

Thanks everyone. I ordered a new half from Campingbox. However, I went back to my shop yesterday to get the rest of the trans/engine installed. I was anxious for a test drive to see how different the 4.12 tranny I just had built was from the 4.37 that was in there. Anyway, long story short, it was actually the stud that was bad. I chased the threads and reinstalled it and it torqued fine. Now Ill have an extra half when the other one arrives. Thanks for all the help! |
