I'm working on a '79 Westy with the stocl 2.0 type 4 engine. The dipstick tube is broken off almost flush with the fan housing and the remainder of the neck comes out with the dipstick. It's slinging some oul out the tube as it won't seal and I havent found anywhere that I can buy a replacement tube (let alone try to remove the old one). I'm trying to keep from having to pull it all apart but need to fix it. I was going to try to thread it and tap it out with a slide hammer. The customer suggested I just thread it and cap it but I don't want him to have a pain in the a$$ every time he wants to check the oil. Any ideas? _________________ Midwest Autosavers, Inc. on the base of the engine there is an oil filler tube attached. Part of it is a nipple that is about an inch long and it is flared wider at the end. Inside the shroud is the dipstick tube. A rubber boot goes between the two. It sounds like you need to replace the dipstick part that is inside the shroud. You might be able to find a junk shroud and pull the tube from it, or just replace the shroud.
in this photo you can see one tube with a boot and one without.
In the top right of this image you can see the part of the dipstick that goes into the boot. It is a solid piece thru the shroud.

Is there enough sticking out to attach another section of tube with a peice of fuel line and some clamps? _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I don't think so but that gives me an idea. I think there is enough that I can JB Weld a sleeve over it. _________________ Midwest Autosavers, Inc. Woodstock, IL |

It is just a tube press fit through the fan shroud and if you can find the same size tube you should be able to press it through the fan shroud to the other side and possibly press out the remaining piece out. Just keep track of how much is supposed to stick out to keep the dip stick accurate. _________________ Brett
