Does anyone know where to get an adjustable voltage regulator for the Bosch alternators as mentioned in this post?

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=267379

If you use one, any problems with it?

Thanks!

I believe they can be found here:

http://www.davebarton.com/AdjustableVoltage.html

but I have not bought one or had experience with them yet. Hope this helps!

They can be found on Ebay for $20 including shipping.

Search for "Bosch VW Voltage Regulator" and one of the ebay stores has them.

Thanks. The one from Dave Barton is a remote mounted unit. There is one that mounts on the alternator and has an adjustment screw.

Has anyone ever used one of these or similar units?

That looks like a good deal. A similar (if not the same) one is further down on the DB site for $32 without shipping. Thanks for the tip!

You guys have me wondering about my charging system. I purchased a rebuilt alternator a few years back. Never seems to fully top off my Optima Yellow Top.

Can someone run me through the tests I need to do to check my system? I also would like to figure out if there is a draw on the system with my key off.

Thanks

Scott

Both the ebay item and the Dave Barton internal regulator have the Bosch part number 1-197-311-021 listed in their respective gargantuan cross reference parts list. I'm pretty sure either one would work fine...

Download this file. It is a good multimeter instruction manual and it has a step by step instructions to do the test.

That should be the case, since the internal one from Dave and the one from Ebay are the same brand in the same boxes. -373A version

Take a look at this. Sounds like the same problem.

**Update 7-14-09**

I ordered the adjustable voltage regulator from a vendor on Ebay and I installed it this weekend. Everything worked out great. It came set at 14.2 volts output and I adjusted it to 14.5 volts after I installed it. It took five minutes to install. Simply unscrew the old regulator from the back of the alternator put in the new one being careful with the spring loaded brushes. It has a small opening in the back with an adjustment screw.

Now with the engine running and the lights and heater on, I have 14.2 volts at my batteries. This will be enough to keep them topped of for peak performance. I previously had 13.7 volts at the batteries. This would be good for people who have AGM batteries which need a slightly higher charging voltage as mentioned in the previous post. I'll definitely keep this updated if I run into any problems.

Here's the link again.

I recently installed an adjustable regulator as well. I adjusted it to get 14.1 at the battery bank. After a short test run the volts dropped. Presumably because the batteries no longer needed the juice.

What voltage should I target given a full battery? 14.2? If that is the case I should go back and readjust ..

Thanks
Mark

Is that last listed one workable - (The Drdepner one)? The earlier ebay links don't work. The last one doesn't list a Bosch part number 1-197-311-021 in their table. Just wondering if anyone can verify compatibility.

Thanks,

-Brian

They sell various ones and the fine print shows the differences. For wbx 90 amp alternators I'm pretty sure you need 28mm, with NO resistor.
