Just installed a new aftermarket radio in to my 88/89 Carat Wolfsburg Edition almost syncro, but could not find anything as to how to, if doable, wire the left center panel sub-woofer. I think, that originally it plugs in to the factory radio with a 10 pin red connector. Anyone has done that?

There should also be an amp behind that panel to drive the subwoofer.

The amplified subwoofer wiring is shown on page 97.199 of the Vanagon Bentley.

Sure is, on 89 that came with the 5th speaker in the center section, just check your original window sticker. Or remove the left side center panel.

Well I'll be...I've always snickered at the thought of calling that cheezy little speaker a "subwoofer". I guess it earns back a little cred

Here's a thread on the original and an extremely well-done upgrade:

Pictures of my spare subwoofer and wiring.
Yes the OG speaker is shot, but I use A/D/S woofers as a direct replacement and are much better in quality and sound.
I have three of these 89 interiors in vans.
My fav for sure.

I took the trouble to replace the sub driver in the 5th speaker enclosure in my Bluestar, and wired it to the new stereo harness. I have to say the 20 watts of bass was quite impressive with the engine off. But at highway speeds I couldn't even tell that it exists. So I wired up a cheap bazooka style sub and now I've got actual bass. In my opinion the stock sub is more trouble than it's worth because of the crappy amplifier but I'm sure someone's done a better job than I at it.

Thanks everyone for the response. I might not do anything about it for now.
