Hi there,

I have a humble question regarding my 6V 67 Beetle. It's been standing in my garage since August last year without being started once. Now, the engine has pretty new oil, just driven around 500km (300 miles), and I'm wondering if it's OK to start the engine without changing the oil, or should I do that first and then start the engine? Any other tips before starting the engine?

I would be glad to have your advice on what's best for my beloved Beetle. Smile

Thanks, Al.

Look around to be sure an animal hasnt made refuge in the fan or engine compartment.

check the oil level.

pull the coil 6 volt power wire to spin the engine without starting it. At least three 10 second crank events. This will prime the oil system, and fuel system.

start it, warm it up, check all other fluids, tire pressures, the basics etc... drive it and enjoy it.

Hopefully you took precautions with the fuel, adding a fuel stabilizer.

Thanks Ken for your help here.

Could you please explain how I pull the coil 6 volt power wire. I just unplug it from the coil and than start the engine as you explained?

you can also just pull the center wire out of the top of the distributor that comes from the coil.

Ok. Thank you for your tip.

Another related question regarding the oil; after how many miles/km should I have the oil changed every time?

Also, I did not take any precautions regarding the gas. Should I empty the gas tank and put new gas in instead or do you tink that the gas is OK after being unused for 6 months?

Thanks, Al

Personally I would not pull the coil wire (center cable) just to be safe and keep unnecesary spark from jumping around.
Pull one of the smaller wires off. Usually the one routed from the front is the 6 volt power wire, the other is the distibutor signal wire. Either is fine.

As far as fuel. Open the tank cap and smell. It it doesnt smell like gas, it needs to be changed.
Id say starting after 6 months in storage you'll be fine.
