goodbye to Mendocino and hello to Sedona Arizona! I am moving there next Monday and rejoining the culinary rat race. I wasn't really looking hard for a new job but after cooking for Muhammed Ali's 70th birthday party three weeks ago a job came and found me. On a super positive note I am SO much closer to kick ass hiking and camping than I have been in a little while... Wahoo. I am a little nervous because I usually gauge how well I will do in an environment by how many westys/buses I see in a town. I only saw one white one last week and that scares me a bit. Oh well!

Francois, now you are closer to my neck of the woods. I live in Durango, Colorado (SW corner of the state.) I get down there now and then for the mountain biking. If you ever come my way, I would love to meet up and enjoy a bottle of vino with you.

Howdy!

Ali's birthday was part of a greater four day event called Escape for Good. The main function was to put star atheletes with wealthy individuals and figure away to wisely spend their money on great vauses... I participated in three main events that weekend...

The wine dinner http://www.flickr.com/photos/aswah/sets/72157629449298701/

Five Chefs paired up with five wineries to create an amazing dinner:

most ridiculous wine dinner ever

1st course

smoked salmon & black river caviar

chef douglas keane

2009 lambert bridge chardonnay
sonoma county

2nd course

agnolotti of duck confit
pear crema, black truffle foie gras espuma, port wine drizzle

chef todd english

2009 melée rhone blend grenache
st helena, california

3rd course

seared tuna tart
piperade, crispy jamon & olive flor de sal

chef francois de melogue

2009 kosta brown pinot noir
sonoma coast

4th course

kobe short ribs
corn & potato mousseline, caramelized young carrots
& crispy confit of sweet potatoes

chef julian serrano

2004 amber knolls cabernet
red hill, lake county

5th course

salted caramel & milk chocolate parfait
cracker jack corn & toasted peanuts

chef beau macmillan

dow’s tawny port, 10 years

Saturday there were two events:

The Celebrity Iron Chef competition (which I kicked ass and won!):

http://www.flickr.com/photos/aswah/sets/72157629114894272/

I paired up with Alonzo Mourning and made a Moroccan style roasted Salmon...

That night we did the Muhammed Ali dinner and all us Chefs did a passed hors d'oeuvres while the champs favorite dishes were served:

creamy dreamy grits with shrimp
chicken fried steak
and two others that escape me now...

http://www.flickr.com/photos/aswah/sets/72157629458492255/

I had a great time... After talking with Ali I returned to my room and found a boxing glove that was signed by him! wowza!

Awesome news! Welcome to the oven of America (they'll be turning it on broil in just a couple months.)

So this seriously calls for an AZ get together in your neck of the woods.

Joseph, is that meet only for Flagstaffers?

Hey Aswah,
There's great hiking and camping in Southern Arizona as well, especially Tucson! If you ever feel like making the drive down, be sure to pm me and we can get together with some other Westy owners here.
By the way, where is your new job at? The next time I drive up to Sedona (its about 4 hours from Tucson) I'll be sure to visit your restaurant.

Welcome to AZ!

l'Auberge de Sedona

Thank god there are many VW owners out there... I was worrying a bit. I usually work weekends but will make it to some events as soon as I get things settled in my new digs...

look for the painted bus!

I proposed to my wife on the hillside above l'Auberge! And was married in Sedona a bit later.

If you haven't seen the grounds already, it is a beautiful resort, especially creekside.

Talking about Arizona get me excited! I'll be moving to Prescott this summer for school. I can't wait. The great out doors will be right down the street. No more hour and a half drives to just to get out of the city. Sedona is just a short drive away and one of my best friends lives in Flagstaff. Sounds like there are a bit of Vanagon owners in N. AZ which is awesome! Now I'm looking forward to it even more. I'm jealous you get to move out there so soon.
