Out with the old and in with the new (also old). Thanks to my brother for getting me a nice engine lid as an early birthday present. The cardboard is nice and it even has the strap intact minus the hook.

So this thread has been dead for awhile. In the past couple months I've been focusing on fixing my rear suspension and put the body work on hold.

Anyways, my car was converted to IRS by the previous owner and it has bothered me for some time. I have nearly all the pieces I need to switch it back to swing axle minus hubs, but have a question concerning IRS and swing transmission part fitment. Are the nosecones the same on IRS and swing axles? I ask because the nose cone on the swing axle doesn't have a hole for the reverse light switch and the IRS does.

I've got five transmissions that came out of cars ranging from 64 to 72 and they all have the same basic nose cone...the early ones don't have the reverse light switch hole but the base number is the same as is the shape.

Good to know, so just swap them and I'm good to go. Thanks, josh.

Unless you're doing a "short axle" conversion, the drums, backing plates and hubs are the same (66 to 73). Or are you doing a wide 5 conversion?

Isn't Wide 5 the same as well?

I am converting to short axle, sticking with 4 lug though. At least for the moment. To my understanding only thing I have to do is machine the hubs for the short axles.

The early backing plates will work with short axles as well, the drums must have the snout machined same as the 4 lug hubs.

Does anyone have the torque specs for the transmission carrier bolts as well as the transmission mounts themselves? I have a Bentley, but it doesn't provide those specs.

Nothing wrong with a swing, run a camber compensator and drive the hell out of it.

Torque specs should be the same for each bolt size in the bentley. If you look in the torque section you'll see m6, m8, m10 all pretty much have the same spec for all their applications.

Swing with a camber compensator handles way better than double joint IMO.

I would if my car had originally been IRS, but it wasn't. The po also didn't do the best job converting it and I'm not prepared to see my engine fall out of my car.
