I put in between 4-8 oz. of MMO with every oil change (i.e. it goes in with fresh oil). Two years now and rarely a clatter from my 2.1.

Tick came back on my off brand car, but then again it's a diesel with a whole different lifter arrangement--more akin to inline VW lifters. Fired up the van and it ticked for like one full revolution and then silenced. _________________ Casey--

Seeing as how your not driving the Van every day the lifter's are bleeding off.
Do the Van a favor and drive it more,& the lifter's won't be clacking on start up.
It's a major design flaw, and the best you can do is run a quart of MMO in the oil 24/7/365.
It'll improve the weak lifter arragement as much as possible---other than having some non-draining lifter's manufactured. _________________ T.K. |

On the upside, STP adds ZDDP to the oil. I add it to top up when changing the filter after the first 5000 miles on my 8-10,000 (annual) Mobil1 15w-50 oil change interval. Good for the next 3-5000 miles.

As far as I am concerned the best long term solution is to run synthetic oils. It is all the broken down burned up additives that create the slug and varnish that coats engine parts. Since synthetics require far fewer additives you get far less crud building up in your oil. |

Have you checked the amount of ZDDP in STP lately? The last time I checked (which was 3-4 years ago) it was about the same as SN save the catalyst motor oils. |

I put a pint in each change and leave it there, oil change due so i'm leaving the MMO out and see, also T.K. i agree about no STP in oil, only rod brng i ever spun had that in the oil,??, never again,not a vw eng tho. |

The van's sat for the last few days. I just fired it up and the clattah is back.
Soooo...
Snake oil #1: fail
I like what some folks mentioned about trying Snake oil #2, in order to remove the build up of varnish, so I may try that during my next oil change. _________________ Casey--

Get the oil out of it, fill it with K-1, K-2, K-3 --who cares?
Clean the crap out a the engine, re-load wih the right oil--short yourself one quart so the Marvel will fit--and run the hell outa it.
Then cross yor finger's that whoever, wherever you got the thing from did't flog it to death & never serviced it.
These engines are known to rattle afer sitting awhile anyway.
The lifter's will bleed down, compounded by ( now ) glue in the crankcase.
Clean it out, run marvel all the time in the oil & the possibilites of the lifter's rattling will lessen--maybe it will go bye-bye.
Clean is good, gluing it up is bad. _________________ T.K.

Well, there are basically two potential problems, crud or wear. When those lifters wear you get to the point of needing heavier oil. I had a WB that would clatter unless I ran SAE30, despite numerous attempts at cleaning it with MMO/CD2/ATF and all that other stuff. Only switching to a thicker oil worked.
When you are talking about hyd lifters, it's hard to avoid talking about oil. There are plenty of people out there running 5w30 or 0w20 (because that's what they ran in their Honda) who can't figure out while their lifters clatter in their 30 year old VW bus. |
There are plenty of people that run 20w50 and can't figure out why their lifters clatter in the 30 year old VW either. |
