Just changed out the NGK BP6et spark plugs. These have 16,434 miles on them. Engine was running well. Erosion on the center electrode was triangular and the gaps were opened up to .045
I think the normal service life is about 15,000 miles.
Just an FYI for all the multi-electrode users.

Thanks for the pics.
The first set of these plugs(BP6ET) that I put in my van I WAY over did it on the mileage, on purpose. Wanted to see what they would take.
31,000 miles
Engine still ran nice and "smooth", with beastly power through the passes. As usual.
They were only a little more worn than yours. I've still got them, maybe I'll take some pics and post 'em. I bet if you were strapped for cash you could re-gap them, PITA but it could be done.
I think these are THE plug for a WBXr. _________________ 1987 GL Sunroof

Yes, I think they could go further. Normally when spark plugs get worn out, they cause the engine to misfire.
Sometimes they will go until the center electrode is totally burned away..and the engine still won't miss a beat, provided the ignition system puts out enough spark to keep going.
It is a compliment that our 20/28 year old ignition systems work this well.

Whats the advantage here? Smoother idle? |
I noticed a quicker throttle response and a healthier idle.
There is a noticeable difference between a new set of these and a new set of stock plugs. Did that little experiment as well.
The nice thing is the BP6ETs are not platinum or anything fancy at all beyond being a tri-tip plug. Which keeps them plenty affordable, couple bucks per plug. _________________ 1987 GL Sunroof

I went to these about 6 months ago and immediately noticed an improvement over platinum plugs!
I had also (before this) changed the cap and rotor and checked the plug wires, but the plugs made the difference. Can now go up my hill in 4th gear at @2500 rpm instead of 3rd with more rpm's. Mileage increased overall also. |

I switched to these and also noticed a huge performance increase.
of course, it could be the installation of the tencentlife engine and exhaust with the spark plugs that made a difference! _________________ Marius Strom Otto: 1988 Vanagon Syncro Westy Camper

The plugs are gapped at .031 from NGK. That works fine in a WBX. Mine opened up to .045 with no running issues in 16,000 miles. Seanjenn got 30k out of a set..they were probably opened up to .050/.060 with no problem.
When you open the box, be sure the cardboard tube protecting the end of the sparkplug is in place and the package is unopened.
Give the plug end a look..if it is fresh and undamaged..install them.
Gapping the multi ground electrodes would be difficult to do evenly or cleanly. I've never had to re-gap mine.
For $3.50 each..just replace them. |

Don't know about the air cooled engines. NGK calls for a BR5es plug..the BP6et is one range cooler and a projected tip. Don't know if there is enough room in the combustion chamber in an air cooled engine for a projected end plug.
If there is room for a projected tip sparkplug..NGK has a BPR5eku multi ground plug..it is about $7.00 each.
Check with the air cooled crowd and see if anyone is using projected tip plugs..if so without problems..these would work provided that they did not foul being one range cooler than suggested. |

Have used them on my 1980 Westy with excellent results. Easier starting and generally improved performance. Put them in a year ago and maybe 5K miles, so no idea on longevity yet. _________________ 1980 Westy

Just put in a set yesterday from napa, so far all is good. Seem to have more power, but it could also be the new fuel pump,temp2 sensor ,fuel filter, coil, but anyway I fell better! _________________ 1987 syncro westy tin top sun roof , GW2.3, rear locker, decoupler, Gary Lee tire rack & winch mount, lift, south african grill, big brakes , rhein alloy ,15 BFG AT, Fiamma 10 foot awning ,140 watt rear 85 watt front solar , mppt, truckfridge, automatic fire extinguishing system, tencent oil cooler, And a RMW SS exhaust! - 1971 bug convertible 1776 engine- 2010 Subaru turbo - 1993 Toyota 4x4 truck - 1999 Harley 95 CI, big bore, Andrews cams . I haven't tried these specifically, but I do run dual electrode NGK plugs in my 1978 westy. With the increase in gap I see noticeable improvement. I also installed the crane XR3000 CDI electronic ignition unit and their hot spark coil. So far it's been a great setup. |

Do you need a different set of plug wires for the NGK BP6ET? I can't get the set that are in my van to snap on to these. They snap onto the Bosch platinum that are in there just fine. _________________ 1984 Vanagon GL

Did you compare the terminal ends? You may have to remove the little caps on the terminals of the new plugs. Unscrew with pliers. _________________ -James

Thanks,
Issue solved! Man do I feel like a moron! That's what I get for doing this in the dark.
Does anyone have any tips on reaching the plug under the AC compressor? Do you move the fuel line out of the way to get a socket on it? _________________ 1984 Vanagon GL
