I have everything I need to mount my Front Bumper except for the bolts...
Does anybody know what the bolt sizes are for the Brackets, and for the Bumper itself?
I'm sure it won't be easy to find this stuff because Home Depot sucks. _________________ "Saying what we think gives us a wider conversational range than saying what we know."

I've actually found a lot of metric bolts at Home Depot, nothing thats higher than grade 5 though (wich I think is grade 8.8 in metric). NAPA seems to have bolts that the other auto suppliers dont have in my neck of the woods. If you look up "Fasteners" in the Yellow Pages you can usually find a speciality store for metric hardware in your area, there's also True Value/ACE.
Good luck,

Rear bumpers are in the same diagram above, bolts are the same size as the fronts
brackets to the frame are 10x1.5x20 (#46 on image #N10252.1)
brackets to bumper are 8x1.25x20 (#44 on image, # N10240.2)

i think this is a prime example of needing to learn how to read the parts book... im not harping, just pointing out that one of a bus owners best friends should be a copy of a correct year parts book. vintagebus.com has them online and i'm not sure if pc, but I put a copy of each pdf on my computer for the times when i'm not on the net. I do own an og copy and then a xerox copy. I use the xerox copy in the shop and the original is a keepsake. but I digress. go to vintagebus right now and spend a few minutes (or more) and familiarize yourself with it. With this reference and a copy of the torque spec book, you're good to go! _________________ Sounding like a broken record as to why You should be measuring protein during harvest in order to better your agronomic practices. |

and just to drive people like you crazy David, the front bumper bolts have thinner heads than "regular" bolts (for example the rear bumper bracket bolts). i have seen these thinner head bolts on too many busses to know it's not just a fluke, even though the parts book shows a regular DIN 933 bolt for the front.
anyway, i believe they have thinner heads for clutch pedal clearance, and i kinda remember using a "regular" bolt once and the pedal hitting it. |

Dang - learned something new AGAIN on TheSamba! But the late (67) parts book shows the same part number for front & back. What years have you noticed this on Jon? _________________ ~~~~~~~~

Does anyone know where to find galvanized metric bolts in this size? I was pulling the bumper off of a 1964 bus and the bolts came off so well. I think the galvanized treated bolts made it possible. Although we think galvanizing bolts is a cheap process, I believe it has its place for bumper mounting bolts by design. I have google searched, and metric galvanized hardware is hard to find. Say a M10X20 DIN 933 bolt, galvanized. If galvanized is not the way to go, someone convince me that stainless steel hardware, or zinc
is better than OE. Stainless/zinc hardware is easy to find. Then I can put them on knowing that someone in 2074 will have an easy time like me today breaking the bumper
bolts loose again on a split window bus. The bolts also still had the galvanized finish between the bumper and overriders, and between the frame and the bumper mounts. |

i think what made the old bolts come out is the wax coating on them. keeps them from galling and rusting. Go in easy, torque good, clamp tight, come out good. _________________ regards

Interesting cool wax coating mandraks, I'll assume now most use Anti-seize on the threads but the WW bolts look like they will rust up quickly. What is a good product to put on the rest of the bolt?

Dang! An ancient thread gets brought up, and I learned something new!
My sunroof swivelseat kombi hits the bolt head slightly. Thought it was due to my bus being a restored basket case, possibly out of square in that area.

Yes, I use antiseize, or even just a smear of all purpose grease.
I have taken apart fasteners 20 years later, and was happy I used that grease. Grease is good. Grease your beam and smear the extra on the underside of the bus.
