Typing on my phone. Driving over snoqualmie pass. Oil is just running out. Tons of smoke. Coming from the top of the engine I think. Valve covers on tight. Anyone willing to talk me through this over the phone?
Have tools with me. Thanks!

Kind of looks like the oil cooler is leaking but it's everywhere. Stock set up
Left side heater box is soaked. Oil dripping down from center engine also

Martin was scared his oil might catch fire, but I told him "no worries". I hope he made it home okay? _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts

Sounds like a plugged breather or a hairline case crack behind #3. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

Man loooong drive on I-90....
Spent the better part of 70 miles crop dusting every vehicle from Snoqualmie to Tacoma (Picture 2 lane smoke cloud in stop-and-go Tacoma traffic). Reactions ranged from scared families in minivans to a motorcycle mama giving me an emphatic thumbs up.
I've heard the "oil doesn't catch fire" deal before... but it looked like it should have.
Haven't had a chance to get to the bottom of it yet. I had a local shop replace the oil cooler and the sender recently. Can't really pinpoint where it's coming from. Someone mentioned that tightening down the cooler may make things worse? Worth a shot? Leave it alone?
The oil light comes on at idle but goes away when throttle applied. Running just fine minus the leak.
Thanks for the quick advice roadside. Owe you a cold one Mike. |

Ah, OK, that changes everything. Bob was likely right, or the shop has no Type 3 experience and used the wrong seals, left out the little tin spacer, or both. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

The guy said he was pretty sure it was the cooler and that he would reuse the seals.... Bah! I don't mind paying good money for quality work... but if it was the cooler, It's annoying that it wasn't done right. The guy owns an early square and had one in his shop, so I figured he was legit.
Thanks again folks |

When I read read this I was brought back to my days as a kid playing Spy Hunter on my 1st gen Nintendo. Should be an easy fix if it's the seals.

Early and late are different as far as seals and coolers- they changed a few times over the years. Plus, if it was a NEW cooler, get your old one back on it. Why was it replaced? _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

To come clean, i've kind of been avoiding learning how to work on it.
I've had great luck with my Type IV engine/carbs for nearly 70K miles... I figured I could slowly learn FI/Type III like I did on the baywindow.
Needless to say, this lady has required a bit more immediate attention.
I had the same issue, though less significant, when I took it into the shop for the inital, post-purchase, full once over. I was told that the cooler was most likely leaking and the seals looked good-to-go. This was about a week ago.
P.s. The spy hunter picture was actually a pretty close approximation. |

I've seen two actual leaky oil coolers in my entire career. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

haha yeah right, oil is hydrocarbons so it burns, its burns good.
I made an engine burst into flames just from the oil and grease on it.
I got it ridiculously hot to do so but I did it yes oils burns well once its hot enough. |
