Just thought I would post an update. I was pretty burned out on the bus after I stopped posting. So I finally found a build to repair the engine. I dropped it off this weekend. I'm sure he will let me know what the issue was. I'm betting a loose rod. |

I know this is an old thread, but I finally found out the random banging noise was a loose rod. My engine builder called me last week and let me know.
The strangest thing about it was that it sounded like it was coming from the clutch area. My guess is the bell housing amplifies the noise some how.
Again thanks for all your help with trying to figure this one out. I took a three month sabatical from working on the bus. I was troubling shooting this in the hotest part of the summer in a uninsluated garage. I think lost 10 pounds. I was litterly and figurativy burned out.
My take away from this: If you screw something up, don't make it worse by screwing something else up with a quick fix. Take the time to fix your mistake properly.
In this case, I mixed up my piston pins. I didn't want to solve it by taking all the piston pins out and measuring them and match them to the correct piston. I instead screwed up a crank rod by trying to make the wrong pin fit. And the rest writes itself. Well, it doesn't but I'm getting ill just thinking about my stupidity and don't want to think about it any more.
It's over. I PAID the price. Move on. _________________ 1978 2.0L FI Campmobile
