Might be the wrong area to post this, but I was wondering if anyone knew of a good camping spot on/near the beach in the outer banks, NC, one that is low key as to not draw a lot of attention from cops/business owners?

There r a few camp grounds on the other side of organ inlet bridge. Thats the place to go to get away form the crowds. We used to use ramp 34 to drive and camp on the beach. Good times.

We stay at Frisco woods on the sound side. Private campground, better amenities. water, power, swimming pool, sites right on the sound front. You can cross the road and your on the ocean front. I don't think the state park where pigryder is referencing has power.

Be prepared for windy days, that's why we go there to kiteboard!

Just finished up ten days in the Outer Banks.

I enjoyed Frisco Campground, but the kids didn't like the Wilderness of it all.

We eventually left there after a few days and wenth to Teeter's Campground in Ocracoke Island.

Here the Bus @ Frisco Campground:

It was very nice, but there wasn't anything to do. We wilderness camp a lot here in Wyoming, and it was TOO like Wyoming for the gang. Ocracoke was better- cafes, stores & shops, stuff to do...

I second the recommendation for Frisco Woods.
Stayed there many times. In the Westy as well as on the moto.
It's about as low-key as it gets in that area.
15 minutes South and you can be in Hatteras.

If you're heading on South to Okracoke, there's a small campground there back by the British Cemetery.
Family run place that's not too bad. I've stayed there a couple of times.
Unfortunately the name escapes me at the moment.

Don't forget the screens... especially if it rains. The skeeters can be crazy.

Yes, even my kids- all born in Wyoming and used to 'skitos were taken off guard by the size and sheer number of the 'skitos

We call it "bug patrol". Just before bed, the kids smash and squish mosquito carcases onto the tent and roof until there is a bug free environment.

Ticks were a big problem.

The UFO is in Buxton, on your left heading south out of town, as I recall, and right after a repair place with a very rusty Vanagon in the lot.

We stayed at that family campground and had one of the most "interesting" encounters of our camping career. It was a holiday weekend and we had already been there a couple of days and were preparing to leave to head up to Frisco to stay in a rental beach house with friends. Our site was bracketed by a group of friends there for the full weekend and more friends were to arrive for our space, checkout time noon. We had every intention to be out early enough but they showed up about 0800 and began crowding in, first hanging out with the friends, them moving the vehicle closer to the spot and then unloading on the perimeter of our space and loudly talking among themselves about "some people." We finally packed up, then locked the van and went for a long walk with the dog, returning just in time to vacate the spot at noon.
