Thanks Tom, I'll let you know. I"m more worried about the hood. I wonder if I should try to find someone to fix it, or just replace it. If I replace it I'm concerned the gel coat won't match.
BTW, I find it odd how it ripped off the Manx emblem.

I would try to replace the hood. Even if you fix & paint it, it would not match down the road because the paint & gelcoat might fade differently.
Did you get the deer, or is it running around with a Manx emblem on it's chest? We almoust hit one in the north rim of the Grand Canyon in 2007, it jumped right over the front of the Manxter. Tom

The deer was probably watching EBAY lately. A little fur for a Manx emblem might have seemed like a good deal.

I doubt it lived very long (we were doing about 50) and I didn't see it until I was looking at its face sliding up my windshield) but it did make it into the woods with my emblem.
Well at least Ill get another shot at mounting the hood latches evenly! Luckily I don't see any damage to the main body.
Kiera has now changed her mind about wanting me to build her a Kickout SS. Says she won't drive anything without a full cage now

I was over in Pittsburgh forthe weekend. Sunday morning when i got ready to drive back, i almost got a whole herd of deer crossing the Rt88 at Trax Farms. That'll wake you up!!

I was on Route 19 heading north between Wexford and Cranberry about 9 at night.

You got lucky. Not much damage for a deer. Up here that damage could be caused by hitting a rabbit. Deer usually destroy the front of a steel bodied car and land on the windshield.

I think its because the front end is so low and everything is angled just right that the deer slide right up and over. He cracked the windhsiled (and probably would have come through without the rollcage) but then kept going. The guy behind me said it launched a good 10 feet into the air.

Adam,
I am sorry that this happened...but am glad to hear you and your family are OK.
It will be pretty difficult to match that orange gelcoat. My hood and windshield surround were the incorrect color and the guy built it anyway. I had asked Winnie about getting it matched and she said it would be very difficult.
Your best bet would be to get a new hood matched as closely as possible, then repaint the new hood. At least taht way if it chipped, the underlying material would be similar in color. |

Upon further inspection, there is some minor fiberglass damage to the main body where the hood sits against it on the leading edge just behind the bumper. I plan to just have this repaired, but need to find a competent fiberglasser in my area.
I also found that the gas tank has a dent in it from where the headlight mounting bolt pushed into it. The tank was not compromised, but I'm still going to see if I can get the insurance to cover a new one and go with a custom stainless unit.

I do some long road trips several times a year with some time spent driving at night, and nailing a deer is one of my greatest fears. I am so sorry that your car was damaged and glad that you and your wife are OK.
A friend of a relative of mine was killed a few years back when he struck a moose with his car. Car and driver both crushed. Thank your lucky stars the deer wasn't bigger and that you didn't make a collision avoidance move that resulted in a more serious accident.
Of course as time passes, you may start to fell less like a lucky guy and more like a guy with a wrecked buggy, but picture yourself being buried with an astonished look and a fair amount of moose or deer hide stuck to your face and you'll feel like a lucky guy all over again! |

I"m still feeling pretty lucky.. even the damage to the buggy wasn't nearly as bad as it could have been.

| I meant to also mention also that I helped a co-worker get a repair estimate on her new Toyota Camry after she hit a deer last summer....it was about a 40mph impact, and the damage to her car was much more severe than yours.....you have a tough little car. |
