Looks to be a run of the mill momentary switch to me... available at any Radio Shack.

PO put one in my Bus (poorly) and I yanked it out.

Never heard of MERIT. Bosch, SWF & Hella were the electrical OEM suppliers to VW.

Haven't heard of 'em as well. Confused Out of curiousity i did a search and found several switches by that name.

Windshield wiper switch up to 69 (or 71) - https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/pix/2155149.jpg
Dimmer switch - https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/pix/2616931.jpg
and Barndoor turnsignal switch - https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/pix/3619704.jpg

Of these ads with original packaging, said they were made in Germany. Maybe this company was once an aftermarket supplier long ago?

Yup, aftermarket company indeed. Found an older post by coad talking about them.. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=153067

Also going with WestyMan, it being an average switch installed by a previous owner. Pretty neat they had made a few items that looked closely to an OE switch.
