Hi.
I want to lower my Thing at the front and would like to know if a type 3 front beam will bolt right up. I think the type 3 is clever because of its adjustability. And besides, I´ve been offered one in good condition.
Thanks

Not without MAJOR modifications. The type 1 beam will bolt right in and is the easiest way to lower a 181. You can sell the front beam then to someone else too. |

You could use an adjustable Type 1 beam, or just replace the arms and spindel with type 1s (I don't know how much it would lowerr it though). |

A fellow put a Type 3 front end on his Thing back in 97. He wrote an article about the conversion in the Thing Stuff Digest. This is the publication of the Type 181 registry run by David Campbell in Washington. You can buy a reprint of the article from him for $.50 or pmail me . This iconversion is possible with a few modifications to the shift tunnel so that the tie rods will clear. You will need to change over to 15" wheels. You also get front disc brakes in the conversion... BtW the easy way to lower a Thing is to put on Karmann Ghia front arms ans spindles. This will give you front disc brakes and lower your front end nearly 3" Again you must switch to 15" wheels. You can also use bug arms and spindles and lower 3" and keep front drum brakes and continue to use stock 14" wheels. K-mann |
