|
|
So me n dad got a new project, a 1972 westfalia campmobile.
i have to upload some more pictures, but this will give you an idea.
it cost 850, sat for at least 3 years, if not 8. we towed it home yesterday, and we managed to make it run today!
dads had fun removing a bunch of junk and interior parts (mold) and is finding all sorts of goodies, like an original plaid front window curtain. (cabinet curtain is there too) but all the rest are custom crap. the seats are in good shape minus some tears, and the back window is broken. we have the original rear net for the hatch too, and all the camping equipment appears to be in tact!
And it has factory AC
which doesnt work
but will
more pics coming soon! M plate being decoded as your read.....

So we got it to run, and since it wouldn't stay running, i wanted to rebuild the carburetor that is on it, a 2 barrel Holly progressive.
first i did the gas lines, and before i removed it from the tank side, i used it to drain the tank into a can. got about five gallons of kerosene outta there dang that smells strong....i prefer the gas smell....
next i took off the carb, and the intake too, because i couldn't get the carb off of the intake while it was on the car (glued to the intake with age) tore it down, cleaned it out (only the bowl was really dirty, but now its all cleaned...) buffed out the intake manifolds with a bench mounted wire wheel to knock the surface rust off, and to lean up the mounting surfaces. vacuumed the peanuts and leaves out of the engine compartment, and with the manifolds off, was able to get even more cleaned up. got new boots and gaskets, and have almost got it back on, but left for monroe before i finished. planning on tackling it again today, and will be adjusting valves, changing the oil, and getting new gas.
gonna try to get some good interior shots, and get some engine shots soon.
any ideas for names?
I said "Smile" dad...

By the way, compression was 105, 125, 110, 115 ( 3, 4, 2, 1) and the plugs were good bosch supers so i cleaned and gapped them (perfect already) and re installed. _________________ Stuart Zickefoose

Looks good! Good enough compression too.
I didn't see mention of adjusting the valves. You will want to do that sooner than later. You mention the engine is of "unknown size". Did you find a case code anywhere? Is it still CB. If so, probably has solid lifters (but who knows for sure).
Looks like a good place to start from, and the price was right. _________________ DJ

As far as factory a/c, iv deduced from the m-code i am a moron. (see section marked "X" and it refers to stupid college kids who cant fix cars. ) its a dealer install. even has a condenser mounted between the frame rails and a guard for it and everything... (water cooled install anyone?) ill try and get pictures.
as far as a motor, the case is a EA76832, a 1700 411/412 motor. i plan to do valves asap, but first, running and stopping is the goal. then oil change and valves. _________________ Stuart Zickefoose

The dash with a non-working dash clock
A shot of the floor and a bit of AC
The worst rust thru besides the battery that we have found so far
Dash with dealer installed AC
Push to start...wtf. this ladies mechanic was a idiot...this is the smartest
thing he did on the entire bus
Is this from a later model bay? we found a different reservoir inside the tubes under the front seats....
Original front curtain (busdaddy) hoping to find a fabric as close to this as we can to reproduce all the other curtains....saving up for that...
Example of the front and rear seat conditions: Good and very usable
This is me pointing at a busted switch (still flips, but no plastic arm) does anyone know what this might do, or if its even stock? its behind the passenger front seat and the sink
sink, ice box, and table. all in great shape.
More to come momentarily... _________________ Stuart Zickefoose

The back seat, dad started to take apart the jalousie windows to figure out why it wont open...thats the screen. i may accidentally forget which is which and swap it with mine that has a hole in it.....
Another back seat shot:
before removing the carpet and crap from the interior....
Jump seat:
More of the engine and rear and side of the bus soon... _________________ Stuart Zickefoose

If possible you'll want to swap out the A/C compressor and switch over to the new refrigerant. The York compressor is a horsepower robber. |

thanks for the tip! i may do that, or just get rid of it all together, and get a front parcel tray instead....this is washington and the folks can open the windows....if anything, itll probably get a BA4, or BA6 gas heater (which ones the right year, the 4?) so mom doesnt have to freeze...lol _________________ Stuart Zickefoose

Where the dip stick should be:
Where it is...
no idea what this is...guessing Fuel pump relay
any ideas on this guy?
a horrible shot of the carb and dipstick:
AC compressor:
And all those wires attach to the coil somehow...first time that fails, hello pertronix and two simple wires...
And a few overall crappy engine shots (started to get dark)

Looks great Stu. For the AC, I plan to leave mine in tact as is, but I am not going to connect the compressor belt. It'll just be there for looks, but it won't be functional. Having said that, the underdash unit does not need the AC, it blows fresh air out of 4 big assed vents at a rate that my 2005 Passat could not touch if it tried. I would absolutely keep the underdash unit, and leave the frozen pop bottles in the recycling bin. _________________ *****************

Not a bad idea...ill try and get the fan working first and see whats up...if not, it may help to fund other things....like curtains or a gas heater...
i think the dealer mounted AC is cool...its even got a protective sheath around it, which would work perfect for a radiator...ill get pictures and show yall what i mean later. _________________ Stuart Zickefoose

The bus in the garage, drivers seat up top for now... and when its not on the wheel stands, the top will go all the way up, so doing the canvas will be a nice and easy inside job excited about that...
nothing like DBM's underside...but not bad in most respects...pretty solid
tow bar, not stock obviously:
that front tow bar? no, they didnt bolt it on....
THEY WELDED IT TO THE FRAME :2gunfire:
the back window was shot from the street....thinking about a safari window....but 300 bucks is pricey...so will probably stick with a stock window and defrost and what not.
