Hi all. Took a trip up to Mineral Wells (from Austin) this past weekend in my 1976 Fuel Injected Bus and got some weird behavior. Was running an oil temp of 215-220F while averaging 63mph. After stopping for gas after two hours of driving, when I accelerated out of the gas station I got some hesitation and lurching. Didn't seem like it was missing. It only happened when I accelerated, occurred randomly and stopped entirely after about a minute. This happened both times I filled up on gas -- when leaving and returning.

I figure this has something to do with stopping the car. Overheated injectors? Any suggestions? Thanks.

I've had the exact same problem w/ my 76 FI bus, and it was most pronounced when under heavy load, (acceleration or uphill it was like riding a bronco). I drained the fuel tank & replaced the fuel filter. No change. I checked the ignition electrical. Nothing wrong there. On closer inspection, I found a wooden dowel(?!?) in the engine compartment next to a vacuum hose. Some backyard-mechanic for whatever reason must have used it to plug the hole in one of the vacuum lines so I just replaced the hose & whether co-incidence or not the problem went away. I've heard other causes for this could be fouled throttle position sensor, head temp sensor, distributor/timing issues. Good luck.

Sounds like a fun trip (except for the lurching part).

Are you saying you had a problem filling up at an Austin gas station? Whenever you stray from the beaten path you end up having to fuel up at gas stations that don't get a frequent tanker deliveries. Water gets in the tank and when it gets low (usually you get low pressure at the pump as a clue) you end up with "bad gas". Did you end up at this kind of station in Mineral Wells?

The injectors hot soak in the summer temps when you turn the engine off but I don't think it's your problem.

I had that exact problem and besides a complete tune up and in tank injector cleaner I capped off the rusty, leaking charcoal canister that comes off of the EGR valve. Ive got a picture of what im talkin about if you want it. ill have to email it to you. check the point gap too i think it had alot to do with it

Pump pressure seemed fine at the stations and the engine ran great all day so I don't think it's bad gas. It's just weird that the problem happened both times I filled up.

Well I know your pump is new and you've got a reasonably new temp sensor II so that leaves fuel filter or something in your gas tank as likely culprits.

Someone suggested vapor lock. Is that possible in a Fuel Injected system? It was a pretty hot day.

It's not supposed to happen because of the Bosch design. The excess fuel is always recirculating via the pressure regulator to prevent this.
