|
|
Hi guys,
I have a 67 with the original engine that i would like to rebuild. i would like to keep the original block for this "original" restoration.
the motor is tired and it has some end float, hence the rebuild decision.
i would like to install 8mm studs and case savers when the case is apart.
I have managed to purchase NOS 8mm VW studs and NOS VW 8mm case savers.
has anyone done this before, especially maching the case to install the #3 case saver. I have not spoken to the machine shops yet. does it need to be deep studed inside the case, just like the later engines? |

Once, a long time ago, we ended up welding an "extension" onto the tap to be able to do the deep stud on 3, but that was on a case that already had the deep 3 recess, does your F block have that? _________________ Aust. RHD 66 Type 1

no it does not have that recess, unfortunately; personally, i prefer to do it like how the germans do it.
would be "ok" if i just install the case saver like the rest of the studs?
thanks for the response. |

Since you are sticking with a stock rebuild I would have no hesitation in doing just that _________________ Aust. RHD 66 Type 1

it can be done
The hardest part IMO is installing that deep case saver, I used a 2" length of 3/8 tubing tightened onto the insert with a bolt |

Nah thats the easy bit, just copper antiseize a stud, screw it into the insert, loctite the outside of the insert and install it, come back 12-24hrs later and undo the stud with your fingers _________________ Aust. RHD 66 Type 1
