I've heard this mentioned a few times, but I don't know what a UN1 gearbox is. _________________ == My Rides ==

Alika can tell you a lot more about this transmission than I can, but it is a Renault transaxle designed for longitudinal mounted powertrains. It had a convertible ring and pinion assembly so it could be used for rear engine or front engine/front drive cars. It was used on something as exotic as the Lotus Espirit, something as unusual and cool as the Renault Alpine and the Delorean, and something as pedestrian as the Eagle Medallian. It has a bolt on bellhousing so there are many engine adaptations possible.
Apparently a good component. The only downside to using one in a Vanagon is its length.

Just as an historical detail, said UN1 (IRS) transmission was used on Alpines, however, and at least to me , Alpine automatically means Alpine A110, 1.1l, 1.3l or 1.6l.
Yes indeed Alpine, thereafter aka Renault-Alpine continued on with the 310, I believe 310 or 610 GTA with said UN1 IRS transmission as, THE famous Alpine, the A110 never had an IRS transmission making do (very well) with a swing axle, which was common to the Renault R8 Gordini 1.1l and 1.3l, not taking into account the racing version factory works.
The reason for the post is that I was at first puzzled on how a Vanagon would behave with a swing axle, my real knowledge of Alpine cars being limited to the 106, 108 and 110.
I am sure Monsieur Alika can give us all the "dirty" details _________________ LG aka VisPacemPB, *The* party Pooper

Interesting! The specs are pretty detailed. I don't get how they are used in the Vanagon platform.

Hello!
You have the choice to back up your engine or cut the crossmember and make another one.
I use the vanagon shifter,I attached the VW ball selector to it and shortened the linkage.I did a replica of the vw shifter, shorter with same bushings and location basically.
Many options have been done, but I like mine, easy.
The bellhousing mates with an adapter plate that needs to be 15 or 20mm I don't remember,I did mine not thick enough for the Subaru,it should have been 15mm,I did 3/8 so I removed material from the input shaft where the coupling is attached.
The splines are the sames as VW,so that's butter.
That's the easiest cheapest swap you can dream about, specially since I found out Delorean flanges can be used along with Eurovan 33 splines cv joints on the VW axle shaft.
You can look at pics on the link in my signature, they are spread over the period, but they are accurate pics

Random thread hijack. I got to drive a new Alpine GT somethingerather 310 on the streets of Lansing, Michigan in 1984. I had it for a week and was impressed by French automotive engineering (wait - that's an oxymoron). It was a beefed model with big front air dam, fender flares and the yellow headlights got me some further unwanted attention. A serious motorcycle accident happened right in front of me and I used the Alpine to block traffic until the ambulance arrived (rider was down in the street). An overzealous officer noticed the headlamps, flipped out on me about the car and started telling me to follow him to the station until another officer who was aware I had played a minor role in helping them talked him out of it. Wild car. Forgot all about it until this random thread.

If you have a Subi conversion, forget the UN1. There is now a better option: www.SubaruGears.com _________________ 1990 Feldjäger Syncro AAZ

It depends on many factors:where you live and how much money you got in your wallet.
You can find a good UN1 in Europe for 150 euros.....,adapter plate is easy to make, shifter is easy to connect, but chassis crossmember has to be cut, which is a big thing. _________________ Silicone Steering Boots and 930 Cv boots for sale in the classifieds.

Hi Presslab,
I have the UN 1-03 model
1st 3.36
2nd 2.05
3rd 1.38
4th 1.04
5th 0.82
Reverse 3.55
Ring and pinion 3.89 (9x35)
I almost never use the 5th gear,it's already really good with 4 gears,I can push the 4th at 100 Mph
Gotta do a video starting from zero Mph,it's freaking amazing how "long" it pulls

You have EJ22 engine, yes? So how would you say the power is in 5th gear? Can it hold 65 MPH on the flats? Are your tires stock size? _________________ 1986 Vanagon Westfalia EJ25
