Looking for a spot to camp 1 or 2 nights next week (Wed-Thur-27, 28th) near UMASS Amherst. Driveway space would be fine. My son is going to student orientation and I, parents orientation. His inclues lodging, mine doesn't. Since I am likely taking the van for camping afterwards in Vermont, I am looking for a cheap alternative to a hotel. _________________ John - 86 Wolfsburg Westfalia "Weekender"

I imagine that a college has parking lots . Stealth camping in a guest parking lot seems feasable. There is always Walmart... _________________ "Always waiting for tomorrow ruined everything"

I'd not keen on trying the stealth camping at the university - I have an assigned parking lot with my plate number on the pass and I am certain the campus police will be patrolling.
Did not consider Walmart - I did that once. However, I had someone pull in and at 2:00 am and leave their car running all night!
I'm hoping to find something closer than the 40+ min drive to the state forest. Not all small campgrounds are on the web - so hoping someone with local knowledge - or a driveway (hint-hint) can help.
Anyone ever camp at Erving State Forest? _________________ John - 86 Wolfsburg Westfalia "Weekender"

Erving is awesome. Nice space between the campsites. There is a Wal-Mart in Northampton that is OK, better than the one in Amherst (Hadley?).
I am out of town, so I cannot help you with a driveway. |

Thanks GreenMachineVW - think I'll just go to Erving and do the drive. It's real nice area out there anyway. Looks like only 2 sites are taken Thurs. nite, so I am going to wing it and skip giving ReserveAmerica their fee.
There was a closer KOA, but the reviews were terrible.
Looking forward to my first camping of the season, well at least in the van. _________________ John - 86 Wolfsburg Westfalia "Weekender"

Thanks people, but the event has come and gone and I had the pleasure of staying with a fellow LiMBO Member in Athol. Practically spent the money saved on hotel on a nice supper with my son in Brattleboro, VT, but that was a most enjoyable time. That was after orientation heading to Mt Ascutney for the night and hiking the next day. Then over to New Hampshire for Sat night and hiking the Franconia Ridge trail and home. 3 nights in 3 different states. _________________ John - 86 Wolfsburg Westfalia "Weekender"
