Oregon coast camping suggestions?

Does anyone have any good suggestions for camping along the northern or central sections of the Oregon coast? All of the State Parks are fully booked for this weekend, so I am after good suggestions for private or Forest Service campgrounds.

We would prefer to be camping on or within walking distance of a nice sandy beach. The only non-reservable State Park is Washburn, but this doesn't have a lot of sites. Can anyone offer any advice on whether it is worth trying to show up and get one of these sites on a Friday afternoon?

I'm not aware of any Forest Service campgrounds on the coast. I believe that the state parks should have sites that are available on a first come basis (non reservable) but I don't know for sure. Nehalem and Beverly Beach are both really nice state parks on the central coast but are likely to be crowded. I believe there is also open camping in the Dunes Recreational area in the Florence area but you're likely to be overrun with ATV's unless you are in the vehicle free area (which is really nice if you want to walk in a little ways). There should be some private campgrounds as well but I'm ot thinking of any off the top of my head.

About 3/4 down on this page I posted a link to a Forest Service trailhead that we thought was really great. Maybe this will help. We've always enjoyed BC and general good nature of the people and hope you find the same as you travel in Oregon. Safe travels.

Rock creek camp ground, north of Florence. Can't remember if they had power or not. Water on site.Porta potties.1/2 mile hike to the ocean.

there are a few campgrounds here and there up the coast besides the state parks. you can always try the state parks though, as people cancel,never show up etc. Oswald West was a neat place to camp,good surf spot too.we went there years ago.you hade to hike in and wheelbarrows were supplied. closed to camping according to the link below. plus I would be nervous leaving my van up by the road now. to easy of a target for some crackhead.

If not, I was just in the Manzanita area and spent a couple of nights in the State Forest north of Wheeler on God's Valley Rd (gravel). I only drove about 2 miles in - I'm sure there are some very pretty spots along the river had I gone further.

Dispersed camping is legal and free in both state and national forests. There are NO FACILITIES, so may not be great for the family, but it is an option in case all the campgrounds are full.

A final option would be to try to camp on the beach at Gearhart, where driving is legal. I camped there about 10 yrs ago and wasn't bothered by the authorities - though that may have changed. It was great - dunes, beach fires, sound of the surf, etc. There were many other cars doing the same, so you may want to ask around and see if they still allow it through non-enforcement even though there are and were "no camping" signs.

Access to the beach is on Del Rey Road or Pacific Way.

just north of Florence is USFS Sutton Creek campground, which is very nice, and don't worry too much about the number of camsites at Washburn. They actually have walk-in tent sites that are very nice and isolated, easy to get to and very quite. Also, between Florence and Yahats are several camp grounds. Rock Creek is very nice, as is Cape Pepetua at Devils Churn.

If you show up early enough on Friday you can usually get a spot. Beverly Beach State park north of Newport is pretty good and usually has first come first served spots. Same with Cape Lookout outside Tillamook. I never trust the reservation site because when I've hecked before and it says 100% booked, I show up and the Ranger usually says they have an entire loop open.

Beverly Beach is good...you could also find roads by Agate Beach and down at the South Jetty in Newport.

Interesting timing on the thread bump, I am going back in less than a month. I am taking the kids to Seattle to check out the space needle but I really want to check out more of the south OR coast on our 2 week trip.

A good tip I got from PDX Westy:

Many OR state campgrounds have "overflow camping". If you are self contained in a Westy and ask nicely, most rangers can direct you to a quiet corner of the park where you can sleep. I would not rely on it, but if you get in late and things are full it's always good to ask about it.

I would suggest to go and ask the locals... There's some amazing camping not withing campgrounds in this area. Some overlook the ocean... others up fs roads to empty peaceful settings...

If you want to listen to the waves renegade camping is more likely then a campground next to the water. good luck.

I'll be driving from Vancouver, BC to San Fransisco leaving in two weeks. What are the odds of finding available campsites on the way down without reservations. Seems possible. I'm also quite interested in the dispersed camping in state parks. Any details on that? We won't need any hookups so pretty much anywhere we can stop to sleep is fine.
