When I was inspecting my engine today I noticed something weird for the first time. My case only has two engine code letters on it, no numbers.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Does anybody know why? Have you ever seen cases without numbers?

It's a VW remanufactured engine, see the little logo with the arrows circling it ahead of the letters? The # was usually on a gold sticker beside that.

Must have been pretty bad if they had to use a new case, most of the ones I've been inside looked like they recycled anything that was even close to limits.

Looking at the pic; it looks like there is some weld splatter and perosity from a weld repair near and over the boss. PO sanded it down to restamp and didn't for some reason.

Every picture tells a story don't it?

like busdaddy said, that has nothing to do with a PO, it is VW remanufacturing that removed the SN.

Take another look at that stamp boss. It may be a reman..but that boss has definately been filled in by PO or case repairerl. Yes most reman cases had a pop riveted yellow gold tag on them. But, again, those numbers were definately filled in with weld. Seen alot of early Harley cases in my day with same kind of crapmanship weld on stamp bosses to change ID numbers.

My guess is someone took the tag off. Probably the case was stamped GE to identify before number plate was added. Guess this post is beat to death now. Wink

yes it is typical of the factory to stamp their reman logo, then put two letters down. on early cases they would mill off the numbers first, but would not plate it.

so, i guess you are saying it was stamped before and welded later? OK...

PostPosted: Fri Jul 06, 2012 10:21 am    Post subject: Engine Block Has No Marking Reply with quote

I noticed this thread about reman engines and the markings.

I just bought this Buggy with a '69 pan but the engine doesn't have a marking where it should. I don't think that it is the original engine because it had about half 6v and half 12V parts on it. Is there another way to identify the engine?

The block is stamped elsewhere "113.101.102 B 17"
I have a few pics but no idea how to post them here.
