Back OT.
I went in search of other $40 awnings similar to bay window thread and struck out.
Big 5, Target, Walmart, Costco, all to na avail.
Any ideas where to get one of those other more self supporting canopies? _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!

I use the same setup: Tarp, tent poles, stakes, nylon cord & binder clips.
It works really well but takes some time to setup & take down.
Still, you can't beat the price!

Do you or anybody have first hand knowledge using the above $40 canopy?
The tarp and poles thing is getting old!
BUT, BUT, BUT, the reviews indicate the referenced Amazon canopy is a pita to set up.
How hard is it????

Have one like this for my 84 , it's a cheap version of what bus depot has. It is not as hard to set up as there's. But with no rear rail I had to clip the rear corners to my roof rack. From 10 feet away it looks like the one they have at 3 times less money. But you get what you pay for, on my 87 went to a shady boy, like it much more! The way I set it up will stand by itself, in wind need to tie the front down. _________________ 1987 syncro westy tin top sun roof , GW2.3, rear locker, decoupler, Gary Lee tire rack & winch mount, lift, south african grill, big brakes , rhein alloy ,15 BFG AT, Fiamma 10 foot awning ,140 watt rear 85 watt front solar , mppt, truckfridge, automatic fire extinguishing system, tencent oil cooler, And a RMW SS exhaust! - 1971 bug convertible 1776 engine- 2010 Subaru turbo - 1993 Toyota 4x4 truck - 1999 Harley 95 CI, big bore, Andrews cams . Yes -and at least the box is 3 times smaller then a Fiamma. And half the price. _________________ 1987 syncro westy tin top sun roof , GW2.3, rear locker, decoupler, Gary Lee tire rack & winch mount, lift, south african grill, big brakes , rhein alloy ,15 BFG AT, Fiamma 10 foot awning ,140 watt rear 85 watt front solar , mppt, truckfridge, automatic fire extinguishing system, tencent oil cooler, And a RMW SS exhaust! - 1971 bug convertible 1776 engine- 2010 Subaru turbo - 1993 Toyota 4x4 truck - 1999 Harley 95 CI, big bore, Andrews cams . Those bunk cheap metal ozark trail poles rust up in less than one camping season in this climate. I have learned to handle them with gloves... _________________ '87 WBWE FAS Gen V |

The EZ-Awning is looking tempting.....
It meets my price point.
Is not stuck to the side of the van in a box.
Seems to be sturdy (?)
The Shady Boy is several hundred dollars it seems.
Other box style awnings are over $500+.
For something I might use a few times a year, I can not justify a huge outlay and an eye sore stuck on the side of the van.
PLUS, I bet the wind noise increases too.....
A big plus for the tarp setup that started this thread was it was simple and not too hard to deal with for me, but it does take time to put up and I got a bit tired of it.....

Come to think about it, I will likely just move this thread content over to the bigger awning thread...... |

No wind increase with mine. The Yakima roof rack makes a hell of a lot more noise than the awning case does.
I've had my awning set up (and put away) in the time it has taken folks to put up (and take down) that Bus Depot EZ Awning. Function over form. However, if you're not using an awning all the time, no sense in going the expensive route.

OR? |
"OR"... 11 pages' worth of awning options in the aforementioned Awning Options thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=462083 . If that's not enough:
Homemade/DIY awning thread (started in 2008):

Looking for homemade awning thread (started in 2007):

4-page awning thread (started in 2010):

2-page awning thread (started in 2009):

SEARCH yields 83 other awning-related topics. So, yes, I'm joining the too-many-awning-threads brigade. _________________ ~Kamz

As soon as we can append to random threads, I could move it......
"Obviously" not enough....

YUP!
I was quite proud of myself (for reinventing the wheel.)
The SEARCH was not even considered.
You can add this to the many threads about tires, shocks, solar setups....
I am an old Curmudgeon' deal with it (or ask Glenn what he thinks....) _________________ "Use the SEARCH, Luke" But first visit the Vanagon FAQ!
