Some time ago I replaced my inop stock digital clock with one I'd lifted from a late-'80's Golf. It worked fine for several years, but eventually died. I got tired of leaving all of that dash real estate to dead space, so I finally broke down and just installed an analog clock from a 944

Finally got around to installing my stock of gauges left over from the Volvo 240 days:

They were already lit blue, so I added blue LEDs:

They are, left to right, Exterior Temperature, RPM, Oil Pressure, Engine Oil Temperature, Transmission Oil Temperature, Volt Meter, and clock. I still have to add the engine sensors, and wiring for the tach, pressure and two oil temp gauges. Obviously, a little tough to see from the drivers seat, but they can be read when needed. Does give the copilot something to look at.

I've been looking at this spot for an oil gauge for quite a while but haven't got around to peeking behind.
Any tricks? I assume the cluster has to come out to work around/behind? Other words of wisdom?

Thanks in advance...

You have to do some trim work to the LED array above, and I actually cracked the clear plastic cover when I was using the hole saw. I ended up removing it completely, though I'm not too bothered by that result. It probably behooves you to try and pull it out prior to attempting the drilling. Given how easily a standard 2 1/16" gauge fits in that space, I'm a bit surprised more folks haven't opted for this mod.

The new gauges Kirk is R&Ding in his Sycro 16. These are in an old dash he had laying around. This is just the test fit stage, he may try to fit them in the original gauge position.

Over simplified question but is there such a thing as a Diesel Fuel Gauge in the round format?

there is a VDO gauge in the round format but it is not Diesel specific.
and the oversimplified question is you are only 50/50 it's the gauge not working vs the sender (most likely) so it's 60/40 it's the sender anyways.

here's 2 differant resistances in VDO fuel gauges from appletree a vw parts supplier, I forget which Ohms the stock sender delivers.
http://www.appletreeauto.com/VW-GAUGES/VDO-FUEL-LEVEL/

but what's the reason your indash one doesn't work..
in fact why doesn't your indash temp gauge work vs an add on aftermarket gauge? that's your real dilema..

in my case it's because my van was air cooled and had no coolant temp gauge stock, and at the time I wasn't smart enough to wire in the 10v regulator to power the gauge..

I don't know if the dash gauges work. At the time of the original conversion a round VDO temperature water and another one for oil temperature and oil pressure were added. I know nothing more except that my fuel gauge doesn't work and nor do I know what the reason behind that is. I am blind to any history, reasons, etc... before I acquired this van such as it was. Slowly one by one sytems going over problems and there have been many! So the trials and tribulations for Scooby & Daizee continue. Confused

Right so my point was not to ask about adding a new fuel gauge, but to sort out and fix your existing fuel gauge..
the same mantra could be used for the coolant temp gauge as well. (but I stare at a blank temp gauge in my own van, so can't preach that proactive work just yet)

I saw them in the original location on DasMule rig. From where can I purchase them? They are not listed on the Website.
And one more question: are they compatible with an AAZ 1.9 TD?
