Went Pier fishing in San Clemente last Saturday, Blue was running very well. On the way back she died in the #3 lane on the (5) north in Irvine back to Claremont.
Love AAA. Anyway, the next day, found the culp[rit in a short hose, described by Van Cafe as #11 from head the lower crossover pipe. Got it repaired and started her up after filing with liquid, etc... Now a steady drip from somewhere in fron of the original problem. May be another fitting or hose, not sure-I need to isolate that. Have searched vigorously and have found nothing on this. Anybody else have the same or similar problem?

The vehicle is an '85 Vanagon GL 4-spd manual

Peace,
John

I can not find this mystical #11 hose at Van Cafe.

What part number is it?

Yes, leaks happen......

What is the question?

You are dealing with a 28 year old cooling system, coolant can come out randomly at this age.

I have had all sorts of leaks even with all new hoses, you gonna have look to find it.

Sorry I wasn't more clear. The short hose is the following:
N901287.03 Hose, Water Pump Pipe to Right Head 1983 to 1985 .
That is the hose I replaced yesterday... Not an easy task in itself. As you say, I will follow the steady leak and see where it leads.

That $8.50 hose is used twice on the 1.9.

It seems that mostly it is the little hoses that leak, too, btw.

You sure the water pump or the metal pipe are not leaking?

You are going to have to wipe off and look.

It can be coming from somewhere else and just dripping there, too.

BTDT.

No simple answer here....

You can use an air pump to pressurize the system and look for leaks that way. Sometimes easier to spot them, rather than running the van and looking for a leak after.

Search for the leak has been put off til the weekend, didn't catch anything on the SC Pier except a serious cold..... Bummer!!!
Any ideas on a good Vanagon mechanic around the Claremont, Diamond Bar, San Dimas area? Sometimes, I gotta bite the bullet...

Peace,
John

Well, the deal is, I found the small leak and tightened a clamp. No Leak!!! Then... Put all liquid up to snuff and went to drive around the neighborhood. Got about a mile out and heard a sound like a lid blowing off of a pressurized cooker, then steam coming out of back vents. Shut it down, went to inspect and the lower right hose on the coolant bleeder (4) hose connector had blown off the fitting. Put it back on, turned the van around and rolled back to the house. So, I put the hose back on, made sure there was liquid in all tanks, etc. took van for another test drive and BOOM!!! Same thing. Now I am thinking that the radiator is not cycling coolant, but sending it back to the engine, causing huge pressure. Looked at the Rad. and it looks O.G. I did add some Barrs stop leak a month or so ago and I probably have a clogged Rad. which may be causing the coolant to not complete the coolant circuit.
I am thinking... Change Rad. and ensure hoses are up to par before I do more damage.
Any ideas on what other thing may cause this hose blowing thing on my 1985 VANAGON GL 1.9 4-Spd. Tranny in Claremont, CA?
Thanks SAMBA Family, you all are the best!!!
PEACE...

The plugged radiator is a possibility. If you pull the feed hoses off the pipes to the radiator you should be able to freely flush water from a hose or similar through the radiator from the engine bay.

Check your pressure cap on the main coolant reservoir. If it isn't opening the system could build lots of pressure. It isn't that unusual for new ones not to work properly.

The another option is that you have a head o-ring leak letting combustion gasses into your coolant. This failure will often show up as a steady stream of bubbles/air entering the coolant even at idle.
