im replacing my too soon failed axle boot. my samba research has led me to these two boots. anyone have any firsthand experience with these?
empi 86-1086 are similar to what is used with the 930cv's
rockford 339-22 also seem good _________________ Reference Automotive: NW Washingtons Vanagon Specialist. (360)366-6965. referenceautomotive.com |

the empi boots are what come on the heavy duty syncro axles, made with the 930cv's that are available from the vanagon specialty vendors.
i have read a couple posts that mention people trying the rockford duraboot.
i havent heard any longterm followup on either of these though. maybe thats a good thing?
anyone using either of these? _________________ Reference Automotive: NW Washingtons Vanagon Specialist. (360)366-6965. referenceautomotive.com |

I have the Rockford boots on my 85 2WD and they are still fine after almost 2 years. Sadly, 2 years is not long enough to help much with the kind of decision you are making. If nothing more, they lasted that long and are still OK. On one of the 4 Rockford boots, I had to undo the strap and rotate the flange, since the holes were blocked, so I won't give them an A+ on quality control.
I had a difficult time getting these boots and finally ordered them through a local driveshaft repair company. It ended up being less expensive than direct from Rockford, if even possible, and a popular vendor who did not ship after several months of waiting. _________________ 85 Wolfsburg Westy Weekender w/ Subaru 2.2 |

The empi you should look at are the heavy duty off road boots 86-9303d or k
I was having various issue tearing boots or having spin out of the integrated flange no issue when switched to the off road boots
Ps the rockfords fail early for me the tie wrap cut theboot over time due hyper extension _________________ 89 Westy with TDI AHU 1.9 manual lots of mods

Asked awhile back and no answer but if anyone has a syncro front axle handy and could measure the dia where large boot end fits would be a big help. Mine needs one changed and i'm looking to use one from a brand-X as another source of boots, thanks. |

normally i agree. however when the builder of special 930cv off road syncro axles specs these empi boots im going to give them a shot. people seem to be pleased with the axles, and i assume the boots as well. _________________ Reference Automotive: NW Washingtons Vanagon Specialist. the problem with sweeping generalizations or when ppl apply a personal experience as a general abstraction without sufficient 3rd party objective stats _________________ 89 Westy with TDI AHU 1.9 manual lots of mods

I deliberately didn't replace the 8.5-year-old EMPI CV boots (for the third etime) when I had the axles out of my Baywindow Bus last weekend, because they still don't need replacing after 70,000-someodd miles of daily driving. The top edges of the ribs are starting to get a bit of checking but otherwise they're as supple s the day I installed them.
That said, they're EMPI boots from 8.5 years ago .. who knows what the current crop is like. |

Tried oodles of boots on my lifted (18.75" hub to fender lip) van that uses the stock 2WD engine carrier = steep (~13.5 degree) axle angles...all ripped within ~6 months. The Empi 86-9303d boots have been on for >3yrs. at this point and look new. _________________ 87 Westy Camper |

i wonder if i have the wrong part#? so the 86-9303d is what you used for stock vanagon axles/cv's? 86-1086 seems to be a listing for empi vanagon boots as well. _________________ Reference Automotive: NW Washingtons Vanagon Specialist. (360)366-6965. referenceautomotive.com |

Here's a shot of one on my van:

thx! got them ordered. the 86-1086 is for the normal boot style where the flange and boot are crimped together. the 86-9303 is for the boots that are separateable to regrease and are for high angles. _________________ Reference Automotive: NW Washingtons Vanagon Specialist.
