Looking at the pictures again. This bus is awesome, and I have this compulsion to want to own it. Weird. Functional folk art at it's finest! I keep expecting to see Bilbo and Frodo peaking out from one of those corners inside.

Nice! Reminds me of the book Rolling Homes. That bus is missing one thing though...

...a back porch...

that book ↑↑↑↑↑↑ was a huge inspiratation for me!

answers to some of your questions:

i did weigh it once on a dump scale, although i don't remember the amount ,it was around the max capacity weight listed in the manual. most of the wood was milled thin where i could. the top structure was strong enough to stand on but would have collapsed easily if there would have been an impact..

i could cruise at 65 no ptoblem once i got there but a head wind would drop me down to 55, then it was driving with my eye on the gauges to see how long i could push it, often taking a break, making some tea and chilling out for a while before heading on.

never had bothered to check mpg .i knew it was not ever going to be great,so it was one less thing to ever worry about . ignorance is bliss on that one..

now this is funny but true, i did draw crowds when ever i parked somewhere. once a friend said we should be spare changin these folks. then a Idea . to do it it a more passive way,i put a donation box on the side with a little sign. it got stuffed with cash all the time! mostly $1 bills but often larger notes as well.

these are the only digital pics i've got , taken before its journey up to idaho to be with it's new caretaker. i have old photos at my folks that i could scan another time.

thanks for the appreciation
James

Shocked I love it! It also reminds me of the book 'Some Turtles Have Nice Shells' ... which is an amazing book about House Trucks.
Great job.

i have been published!
this book has just come out recently and my bus is in it !
page 159 ,just some small detailed shots in the section on rolling homes
these photos were taken by a friend back in the day and he had worked with the guy publishing this book

http://www.amazon.com/Tiny-Homes-Shelter-Lloyd-Kah...tiny+house

the irony is ,i could not find any other photos , probabaly due to my' be here now' mentality and never keeping anything to long. so some memories preserved after all

i know some of you really wish the whole hippie/vw bus thing would just fade away
but i think i did my part to make it stick ! Very Happy

That is a very cool bus you created there. It truly looks like a home on wheels. Is your ex-girlfriend still driving it around?

This is awesome! I have a picture of your bus that I took in 199? at the Rainbow Family of Living Light Gathering. I think it was in Springerdale, AZ. Or maybe it was Prineville, OR? I'm gonna search my basement for all my old photos and see if I can find it.

I was back at my folks house looking through pictures, trying to find one of the '68 fastback they bought just before i was born, No luck. But, I came across these of my first bus ! A '79 i got in '88.

Me and my dad, ya he is feeling a little apprehensive............

and after the epic summer tour of '88......

That was a one summer paint job, it drew way more heat than i was willing to continue to deal with, so it got a earth tone rustoleum roller job next.
That bus was amazing, I have no recollection of how many original miles it had , but it was a great road warrior.
It went maybe a dozen coast to coast journeys of dead tour and rainbow gatherings, before i had to pull the engine for my first rebuild experience. That was in Santa Fe , NM.. Sure ,lots of breakdowns and challenges along the way, but that was all part of the adventure, right?
Then on and on it went. When i got my next bus that i built in previous photos , I swapped the engines and it's still rollin' with her .
What fun times those where and they rolled into pretty damn good life today.

Bless the Bus! For they allow dreams and freedom to come true.........

(got a feeling i might get another one soon)
