Pics and write up of VSS Speedo mod?

I read that you can uses late 80's vss from Audi and VW's on our vans. I've search but found no write up on it.

Does anyone have pics and an explanation. What cars are donors?

I am assuming you want the vss for your Subaru conversion.

I bought one from Dan Flemming (vanmanbajadan) on e-bay. He has one for sale right now: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/VW-Vanagon-Subaru-T...enameZWDVW

There is a little cover plate on the back of your speedo. Remove it and pop the vss in. Dan includes instructions on how to wire it. One wire for power. I got mine from the switched blk/gry wire on the steering colomn. One wire runs from the ECU, and the other is ground. I used an unused cruise control wire that runs from engine compartment to the dash. I think there are some pictures in my conversion thread, and in my gallery of the cruise control wires. I have never had an error code, and have never experienced the stalling after a long coast to a stop that I have read about.

They are from 1980's Jettas with cruise control.

So do I take from this thread that I could use one of these on the back of my speedometer when I install my Audiovox aftermarket cruise control, right?

I have one of the Audiovox kits sitting in my garage waiting for me to dedicate a Saturday to doing the install. I had planned on using the magnets on the axle, but I like the idea of the VSS better.

So should be an easy addition to the Audiovox kit, right?

I hope it works, Dan said he tried it with a factory cruise and it worked. I just bought a Rostra and will try to hook it up when I get it.

Hate to say this but: Me too!

I want to use this VSS along with any cruise control. Our Westy is an auto, so you can't use RPM in case kick-down happens, and the idea of using magnets on the drive shafts has always seemed half-baked to me. (I know it works, but it just seems an in-elegant solution)

I know this has been covered before here (and the AudioVox has been covered a lot on MG forums) but is there a compelling reason to use one after market cruise versus another?

I think Dogpilot installed a non-AudioVox cruise...

my 1990 westy has an inductive pickup for the cruise control where the Jetta fitting is supposed to plug in on the back of the speedo. I'm still going to remove the regulator and try it. I'll let you know tomorrow.

I put a Rostra in. It works just fine. I had adapted an (?) 80 audi or Quantum one. It needed a fit of filing on the plastic to get it to match the contour of the speedo mount. This a pic of the Vanagon one installed, the Audi one I modded looked exactly like it.

I modded the turn signal stalk to take the control:

OK - installed the sensor. It definitely sends a signal that my Scan Gage can read, but neither VW speedo nor factory cruise control is working. Dark now...I'll look at the wiring diagrams tonight and try again tomorrow.

duh...got it all working! My problem in the initial install was that the Jetta sensor was bottoming out on the silver wheel within the speedometer. Pulled the sensor, made a 1mm spacer (2 washers would do, but I didn't have them around when I did this at 11pm last night), reinstalled.

Works great. Speedometer, odometer, factory cruise work just fine. Sensor sends a speed signal that OBD2 code reader (ScanGage) can read. So now I can read MPH and MPG along with all the other signals that the ECU sends like volts, fuel pressure, water temp, intake air temp, throttle position, load, etc.

Thanks to Dan Fleming for the sensor and basic installation instructions!

The one sold by engine wiring.com is a no brainer IMO, I connected the two wires at the J box when I did my conversion and have not thought about it since.
When I see what lengths you have to go to for the installation of some of the other types it seems like a huge waste of time for something not as reliable, that also relies on moving parts etc...
