I have a parts Vanagon, and since I have trouble getting up into it the Syncro, and was worried about grabbing the steering wheel each time I decided to pull the passenger side grab handle and install it in the Syncro. Here is the finished product.

Good luck in finding them.....the install took all of ten minutes.
Just make sure to get the escutcheon that the handle screws into, screws and caps for the handle, so that they sit away from the pillar, which keep the handle away from the windshield.
Just a note. Be very careful drilling into the A pillar as there is a wiring harness going up it. I knew it was there, so the first hole was drilled very slowly. The I kept a dentist pick on it while drilling the last three holes to keep it away from the bit. Slow and sure is the best way. _________________ "Two things are infinite: The universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe." Albert Einstein

Not a bad idea either. For me the placement on the A pillar is perfect. I might throw my back out reaching for this one. _________________ "Two things are infinite: The universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe." Albert Einstein

Aren't we special... That is cool, I did not know they were an option or otherwise. I only realized I needed it and had one. _________________ "Two things are infinite: The universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe." Albert Einstein

Neither of these have the escutcheon or riser, if you will to angle the handle towards the drivers. I don't think it is a good idea to have them flat on the A pillar, but thank you for pointing out the link. _________________ "Two things are infinite: The universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe." Hey Casey,
Any more pics or details about this location?
I bought a spare handle, which came with both styles of risers, in order to do just this! My 5'3" wife wants an oh-sh!t handle above here head (can't reach the A-pillar handle while seated).
I'm not sure where the best place to mount would be(?). I don't want to disturb the trim piece, but it needs to be solid... i.e. wheres the beef up there?
thanks! _________________ sold -> '85 Wolfsburg Syncro / 'Built' DOHC EJ25 (a great machine!)

That handle is from an early '90's Passat. It's not entirely evident, but there's a fair amount of metal that runs up behind the dome light on the drivers side. It's probably best to pop the light out and feel with your fingers to determine how far you can go, but I think it's something like another inch before you run out of metal. I don't use that handle as much for ingress/egress, as for adjusting my position while in the seat. _________________ Casey--

The driver's side A-pillar handle mod is one of the first things that I do to my vans, both 2wd and syncro.
The handle goes from convenience to requirement when the van is really off camber to the driver's side and you have to get back in by running, jumping then finally climbing your way back into the pilot's seat and the passenger's side is blocked(don't ask how I know ). |
