Hey all,
Once again I consult the allmighty Samba for wisdom...
So, '69 Bug, standard transmission, bone stock '72 dual port motor.
Recently installed a freshly rebuilt Solex PICT 34... previous issues with a Bocar (stumbling, hesitation, refusal to run) prompted the switch back to a Solex. Once installed, my idle seemed to be either barely above dying or revving really high.
I then replaced the throttle cable, greasing it on the way in, and now that's smooth but the idle issue remains. The car does not want to return to idle without kicking it down really hard. Or when it idles, it will stumble and die.
Is this a choke issue? Standard oil bath air cleaner, etc etc.
I'm at a loss here.
Please help, and thanks for any advice.
-Zack

Can you shoot a pic of the fast idle cam on the carb when the engine is warm?

NO PHOTO means we are all blind..... 40years of wrong and missing parts....
what tranny, manual or auto stick?
WHAT DIZZY and idle will never be right if static time is way off.
where is your? the dizzy pn is on the rear.
car came 205AN dizzy set to 5deg. BTDC STATIC, is it (both)
AN is Manual AH is autoclutch. suffix on DIZZY.

GOOD IDEA. Back to stock...

BUT NO DIZZY STATED , bad that......
previous issues with a Bocar (stumbling, hesitation, refusal to run) prompted the switch back to a Solex. Once installed, my idle seemed to be either barely above dying or revving really high.
HOT OR COLD OR BOTH, and did the choKE OPEN100% HOT?

I then replaced the throttle cable, greasing it on the way in, and now that's smooth but the idle issue remains.
the 34pict3 ,the throttle buttery fly is 99.9%closed, in fact must never
be fiddled,
so if the cable is slack (is it?) and the fly plate is closed, (LOOK down that air horn and see) then the cable IS NOT IN THE PICTURE. not IT.

(force the choke open by hand, is the main fly plate 99.9% closed? if not
feel the cable as you flex cable does the fly plate move> it must not.
if it does the cable is bad, it must have some slack or is wrong.

ONLY USE THE AIR BYPASS screw to set idle, did you put in a new
O-RING ON THIS SCREW? id bet its bad or missing, and will leak air.

The car does not want to return to idle without kicking it down? really hard. Or when it idles, it will stumble and die.

ok 34pict.
we clean it 100%
then kit it and not forget a fresh oring, on said screw.
then we tune it.
see that here.
bullets 3 and 4
here

http://ac-vw-remove.com/At_Wits_End/Carbs-Suck/carbs-suck1.html

now that choke fast idle screws.
you set it to1/2 turn or .004 inches and leave it there. forever..
with choke off, hot.
or with carb in lap , upside down. (gas drained out)
looking at the fly plate.

this step is just 1 step in a rebuild , did you rebuild it, and if yes, did you follow all steps?

my suspicion is you bought a rebuilt.
id the bottom butterfly ,does the large hole in the plate present.
this sets minium air. at idle. some solder is closed or put rivets there.
this is my first check.
did you set the screw 2 of 3 screws right, per the Rob&dave page.?
the 3rd screw is a never touch screw but can be set if someone buggered it.

most new carbs sold do not fix the problem
why?
Air leaks.
bad motor.
Dizzy timing totally wrong, or owner never did the tuneup.....
carb is last ....

but if it is carb. we can tune it and adjust it.
the 8 top fails are: (not counting air leaks , assumes clean carb.)
1: fuel pressure wrong
2: float level wrong
3: initial screws set wrong ,see rob&*dave
4: bypass o-ring missing bad or jammed in to the seat all ripped up.
5: cold choke fast idle cam screw not set to 1/2 turn.
6: wrong jets in carb. (we measure them)
7: no 12vdc to choke, or it bad or stuck closed.
8: throttle cable set not slack but set tight, not allowing carb to set idle.
this cable is adjustalbe at the end of said cable. per bentleys.
