here we have a 72 bus w/ a stock 1700cc engine. sporting a weber prog. carb, and 009 dizzy. up until a few days ago, the car would run and almost drive. it had no power to speak of, but it would crank and rev. I was adjusting the timing and the points repeatedly, to try and find the lost power. it then died, and has since to start again. I have static timed it with no avail. it could be one of two problems: fuel or spark.
my question here is how do I make sure that the #1 is at TDC? I have tried the notch at 0, the screwdriver in the sparkplug hole to feel the piston top out, and everything else imaginable. the coil is good, and the condenser is good.
what the hell else could it be????? |

physically the wire in the spark plug hole and waiting to see where the piston tops out at is pretty definitive as to TDC, when the wire stops moving up or down in the hole when cranking it you know that is TDC. |

Skippy, you'll hate me for this, but I once had a 74 in the shop where the rivets holding the cam gear to the cam broke. BUT- in this case you should hear the engine turning over abnormally fast.
I have also seen the boots on the intakes on the Webers rip- Underneath where you can't see it, natch.
I'd start with a compression test, then a little gas in the carb to see if she'll fire. If she fires, your problem is fuel. If she doesn't, or does but not too well, check the dist. cap for cracks. Check the coil for battery power. But, best educated guess, not being able to run a diagnostic check, would be a fuel delivery problem from the way you described it. |

i have checked the coil, the spark is orange. i have sealed up the intake system to the 10th degree. we tried pouring gas into the carb w/ no response. the distributer cap is brand new. this is starting to drive me crazy, i have never seen anything like this. i am starting to believe that this is an internal problem.
this is the 1st type 4 i have ever worked on, and i freaking hate it!
damn pancakes. |

Do you have spark at the plugs? |

Try something different ......
Take the valve cover off for 3-4 side(left). Turn your pully until you have(feel) slop in the vales for #4. Check to see where your Rotor is pointing. Should be in the position for #4 Plug wire on the Dizzy cap? If it isn't re-do your plug wires in the correct order on the cap. Button it all back up and give it a try ? May have to adjust timing a little?
Hey...... it's worth a try ? |

I'd try the compression test next. |

I agree with drruss. It sounds like you've got the spark plug wires going to the incorrect cylinders. Did you move them around when you were adjusting points, etc? If they are in the wrong cylinders you would still have spark but you need spark at the right time. Check that out. (With your trusty Idiot book or other manual) Good luck.
