I live at about 3000 ft elevation in the Sierra Foothills. My 61 currently has a pretty stock 1600 in it with 4.375 gears. I will be up grading to either a warmed up 1600 or a 1956 that is almost built. Most of my driving is rural with some hiway....At first I was goin' for the 4.12 gear, now I'm rethinking it. Driven plenty of later stock bugs with the 3.87 and they seem to pull it just fine....a lillle long in the gear sometimes but they manage.
My bug is considerably lighter and will have more HP/pound even with a warmed up 1600. Even now 1st gear and second seem so short...
Any thoughts ?

I am very happy with my trans in my 62. I put a stock 73 Ghia trans (3.88 R&P) converted it to long swing axles. I have a 1776 and was amazed when I swapped the early trans out this last year. So much better to drive and will easily do highway speeds. No cooling issues. _________________ 63 Ruby Red Double Cab
