I am at a cross roads in my engine/budget planning stage for my 72 panel. I bought a running 1600DP that I planned on putting dual carbs on. After lots of reading I am thinking a 1776 w/ duals would be a better idea for the hills etc. Parts will be easier than the orig 1700 motor (it's fried) If I get a 1776 it will probably be a new turnkey.
So to those of you that have been there, done that... please share your opinions on my 3 options... thanks! _________________ Don't harsh my mellow...

The Pancake motor, parts and all are at a premium. Upright parts are readily available and you don't have to hunt for parts all over the country.

Flip a coin. All 3 would be good. I personally would only want a T-1 and I like my 1600's. The 1600 with some goodies I like better. But there is nothing much finer than a top quality stocker.
The real factor about staying T-4 or going T-1 is the quality of the conversion. Slop job not acceptable. _________________ 71 Superbug

I have to say, for a looooong time I was a Type IV only guy. However, I recently built my first type 1 for my 67 westy. Although I dont think it really was all that much cheaper in the end, I am very happy with it. I built a 1776 with bigger heads (mofoc 042) an Engle 100 cam, and dual 40 carbs and man, this thing MOVES faster than any other bus I have driven....including the dozens of type IV's I have worked on. So, like someone else said, flip a coin. As a former stock nazi, it is a tough call for me. I built my 1776 to go into any project I own. I have a problem selling cars too soon, but will keep the motor for anythign that comes along weather its a bug or bus or type iv bus. |

If you are going to install a Type 1 engine in the bus, at least buy the correct engine tinwork stuff to keep it as cool as it can....

....Like the hotrodders say.."There's no replacement for displacement"...the stock 1700 parts are spendy and the 1776 is a good place to start anew....parts galore almost everywhere and much less expensive than the 1700-1800-2.0L engines. |

I have been looking around for the orig engine with so little luck while the uprights are everywhere.
I think when its time to get it up and running I will deal with the 1600DP then (since I have it), and continue to save for a built 1776. I will prob keep the 1600DP for both rides as a back up.
Thanks for the input everyone _________________ Don't harsh my mellow...

Keep your fried T-4 if you have room for it. Any of the three potions are worth while. |

What is wrong with your 1700? If the bottom end is okay that would be the way to go. Done right it may be the last VW engine you will need. |

If he were to cut the transmission input shaft to fit an upright motor, what would need to happen to get the T4 back in later down the road? _________________ Learn how your vintage VW works. And why it doesn't!
